Survivor: China: Week 2 Recap: Wrestling With the Davel

Big ball challengePosted by Zhillbear

Although Dave of the Zhan Hu tribe says he really didn’t want to take on the role of a leader, he decides that embracing it is better than fighting it. And by “embracing leadership,” I mean “being patronizing.”

The War: “FUBAR”

hurtgen forestPosted by Jeff Pfeiffer

Ken Burns’ The War picks up again this Sunday with the first of its final three episodes. When we last saw the series, hopes of a quick end to the war in Europe were running high following the D-Day invasion, and the Allies’ rapid advance toward the German border.

But as we see in this episode, nothing can be assumed, certainly not victory against a desperate opponent in wartime. Overconfidence can lead to things becoming “FUBAR” — F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition — very quickly. [Read more →]

Catching Up With The Gang: An "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" Recap

It’s Always Sunny_North KoreanPosted by Mike

With The Office returning with an hourlong episode last night on NBC, and two new episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia airing on FX, I watched so much TV last night that my left eye has been twitching all morning. Then again, that may be the result of the stress caused by watching my beloved Cubs send Steve Trachsel to the mound yesterday in a critical game against Florida. The Cubs disappointed but It’s Always Sunny didn’t.

The first episode, “The Aluminum Monster vs. Fatty McGoo,” featured go-to guest star Judy Greer — who you might remember as the bearded lady from My Name Is Earl — as Dee’s former friend/nemesis Ingrid Nelson. It seems Ingrid, who was known in high school as Fatty McGoo, has slimmed down and opened her own clothing store after being inspired by Dee’s own claims that one day she’d become a famous fashion designer. After all, if “the Aluminum Monster” — as Dee was known in her back brace days — could do it, why couldn’t Fatty McGoo?

C.S.I.: Sara Smiles

Posted by ButtonKnows

If I were Warrick Brown, man, I would be getting nervous. Reeeeal nervous. Because I am guessing about 15 episodes of C.S.I. from now something really inventively crappy is going to happen to him. He’s due.

See, at the end of Season 5, toward the denouement of a twisty storyline almost as inventive as this past season’s miniature killer, Grissom’s team wound up with their Nick in a box. (”Step one: Build a plexiglass box. Twooo… put your cop in that bah-ha-hox. Three: Make them open the box.” You can take ‘er from here … and yeah, I know there’s another d-word for detective but my boss says to keep things PG.)

Season 6, eh. Storywriters seem to lose their way a little — maybe freaked out by that whole “Grey’s Anatomy’s coming” thing and wondering whom could serve as McSleuthy? But still. There were a few tense moments when we weren’t sure ol’ Brass was going to make it, even if the real jaw-dropper was that we found out for sure that Grissom and Sara were totally doing it. Putting a total target on Ms. Sidle’s back for the season ender, you ask me.

And sure enough, there she was, pinned beneath a car in the desert, both in miniature and in real TV life, fighting for her real TV life as the rains came down. [Read more →]

"The Office" Recap: Fun Run

Posted by Mike, Ryan and johnnysweeptheleg

Michael from The OfficeAt the start of last night’s Season 4 premiere, Michael is feeling great. It’s going to be a good year: Jan has moved in with him, Jim’s back at the Scranton office, Ryan has landed a job at corporate, Dwight and Andy are making sales … then, as he pulls into the Dunder Mifflin parking lot —bam! — Michael hits Meredith with his car.

After a brief update on Jim and Pam’s relationship status — they claim to be just friends (to quote Kevin, “Are you kidding me?”) — Michael breaks the bad news to the rest of the office in a way that only he can, including a status report that “the doctors did the best they could … and she’s going to be OK.”

It should be mentioned that Dwight assumes Michael hit Meredith on purpose, as does Ryan, prompting Michael to respond in his defense, “No, I was being negligent.” Much better.

"My Name Is Earl": Inmate 28301-016

Posted by Ryan

My Name Is EarlThe one-hour Season 3 premiere of My Name Is Earl, “My Name Is Inmate 28301-016, Parts 1 & 2,” finds Earl doing the time for Joy’s crime. Earl’s not fitting in with the prison cliques, but he finds Sonny (Remember him? The beer-tag guy?), who helps him stay invisible (mostly by hiding behind fat guys) and safe in the slammer. Earl also finds Glenn, a Camden Scout he once duped into breaking into a house, in prison. Earl realizes he led Glenn to a life of crime, and that he can cross Glenn off his list by helping him earn his scout honor sash. Earl calls on favors from the other inmates, and eventually gets Glenn his badges. Glenn gets paroled, and goes on to live like a Camden Scout instead of a thug.

Randy’s having a hard time getting by without Earl, but Joy agrees to take care of him as a favor to Earl. After coddling Randy, Joy discovers it’s best to show him tough love and let him learn on his own. But in the end, Randy still can’t live without his brother, and he steals a car so he can go to prison, too.

FSN's Best Damn Sport Science Show Period

Posted by Cubicle QB

Is there any “hang” in Michael Jordan’s hang time?

What is a bigger target: an elite NFL receiver or an elephant?

Could you jump out of a second-story window without getting injured? (I’m going to find out right now.)

FSNQuestions such as these that have gnawed at your soul will finally be answered as FSN premieres Sport Science Sunday, Sept. 30 at 9pm. This new series of one-hour shows looks to explain sports stuff with science stuff. (Will they also explain why jock stuff and nerd stuff shouldn’t mix?) Sport Science uses motion-capture technology, CGI, high-speed cameras and biomechanical sensors to reveal stuff like impact force, acceleration, ballistics, muscles firing and so forth.

Praising "Cane": A Recap/Review

Posted by Sarah

Last night was the series premiere of the new CBS drama Cane. I’ve been looking forward to this show for a month or so now, ever since I dreamed that I watched the entire series in one night. My excitement had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Jimmy Smits (pictured right) is a fine-lookin’ man.

My hopes were further raised when I saw that the premiere would be shown “withcane.jpg limited commercial breaks,” thanks to a generous corporate sponsor who has monopolized the limited ad time. Well! Maybe that kind of thing happens pretty often, maybe not — I don’t watch many shows, so I don’t know — but I was impressed.

The show starts with a launch party for a new marketing campaign for Duque Rum. It’s a hoppin’ little shindig, with Cuban music and alcohol for everyone. At this party is Pancho, played by Hector Elizondo, who looks old and sick — and with good reason: His doctor tells him he has six months to a year to live. Ouch.
