First, if you missed it, there was another murder in Tree Hill last night. Yep, that’s right, Quentin is dead. And we should have seen it coming. So much time in last night’s episode was spent on re-establishing Q’s character as a responsible A-student, basketball star, sterling big brother and quasi-uncle to Jamie that something had to happen to him. All of that talk with Haley about his plans for the future, thinking of becoming a father …
How can so much romanticizing happen on OTH without death in close pursuit?
In classic OTH bad taste, Q’s death was told via a typical OTH “switcheroo” edit. After entering a gas station to pay, Q noticed a bloody pair of feet laying on the floor of the station’s back room. When he turned his back to the man at the cashier, the view cut to a pistol being raised and fired. Then we cut away to see Deb with Brooke, pistol in hand, at a firing range. But then we cut again to Lucas and Peyton receiving the phone call about Q’s death.
You could almost hear the squeals and “OMGs” coming through the Internet chat rooms.
So, yeah, it was a big night on OTH last night. Other than the big death event, here’s the rundown:
Skills and Deb were caught smooching … by Jamie. (Deb denied it, but Jamie said he thought it was “cool.”) Nanny Carrie fed oatmeal to Dan Scott … with roaches. And it turns out, her home is right across the street from Jamie’s school — her plan being to leave Dan’s SUV out front to make it look like he’s the suspect when she finally kidnaps the little tyke. (Of course, Dan, with his heart condition, knows he’s going to die without the transplant, so when he’s finally able to talk again, his first words to her are, “Your plan sucks.”) Lucas and Peyton are still gawking over their impending nuptials, and I get the feeling their wedding is going to end up being a much bigger event than they planned, and probably will either close out the series or will near enough. No word yet on what the marriage will do to Lucas’ publishing career, but maybe we’ll find out. Brooke refuses to tell Peyton or anyone else — including the police — about her beating and robbery, with the exception of Deb, who once tried to kill Dan Scott. But thanks to her silence and Deb’s complicity, the perpetrator is still out there potentially causing mayhem … and may have been the one to kill Quentin.
Will it shake out that way? I don’t know yet. But one thing’s for certain: That whole Nanny Carrie the Kidnapper plot is so over-the-top preposterous, even the most ardent OTH fan would have to concede its utter silliness. I can barely stand to watch — I mean, even more than usual …
