ABC Family Reaches For Laughs

by Karl J. Paloucek

Continuing its mission to be maybe a little more “ABC” than “Family,” ABC Family is stretching its comedy wings for the first time with back-to-back original series premiering next Monday.

First up is “Roommates” (9pm ET), executive-produced in part by the team that brought you “Reba,” and starring Tamera Mowry, whom you might remember from Disney’s “Twitches” movies a few years back. The series centers on a group of friends who room together in New York City following their college years. (Sounds vaguely familiar, doesn’t it? Aren’t you at least a bit curious to see how big the apartment of THIS group ends up being, especially since they’re all supposed to be paying their dues?) As they all struggle with the demands of work, cope with the difficulties of finding love in the city — or even in their own apartment — and withstand barrages by their well-meaning but overprotective parents, Hope (Mowry) and her four pals depend on each other to get through the tough times … when they’re not fighting over the bathroom.

Following up is “Sophie” (9:30pm ET), a comedy that has its beginnings in the suddenly

disastrous life of a successful talent agent. Sophie Parker (Natalie Brown, “Saw V”) had built an enviable world — a flourishing business, a loving boyfriend, Rick, and a baby ready to make them three. Until Rick ditches her right before the baby is due, only to move in with her top client, sets up shop in competition with her and woos away all but her most cantankerous, difficult client. Getting through it all and rebuilding her life is going to take a sense of humor, particularly since her meddling mother is determined to see her and Rick back together.

Will ABC Family’s newfangled plan blossom into a new and healthy direction for the constantly evolving network, or will it be back to the drawing board? Tune in next Monday, March 23.
