Five Fabulous Flicks

Start the weekend — and next week — right with these films airing May 1-8. All times ET.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)
Perhaps not in the same league as Wilder’s masterpiece Some Like It Hot, but this iconic send-up of marriage and what happens when the wife and kids are away — and a peculiar blond bombshell moves in upstairs — still stands as one of the great American film comedies. Fox Movie Channel, May 1, 8:13pm ET

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Sometimes it feels like the Coen Brothers try a bit too hard for the Lynch-like feeling in their films. This wasn’t one of those times. Their Depression-era retelling of Homer’s “The Odyssey” is delightfully mischievous, with solidly amusing performances from leads George Clooney and John Turturro. Boasts a Grammy-winning soundtrack, as well. CMT, May 3, 8pm ET

Where To Watch The Kentucky Derby

By Ryan

For those of you interested (I’m mostly talking to you, degenerate gamblers and C-list celebrities in ugly hats), the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday on NBC. I really can’t tell you anything about this year’s Derby, other than every day this week it seems like some potential favorite has been scratched due to injury. Are there even any horses left in this thing? I Want Revenge as been installed as the 3-1 favorite. I’m taking Papa Clem at 20-1. What the hell. I like his name. He’ll probably have to be put down right on the track.

Here’s some info on NBC’s coverage, with ESPN and even Bravo’s (!) supporting programming after the jump:

Getting “Lost”: The Variable Review

By Mike Frey and johnnysweeptheleg

Think you have issues with your parents? Try being Daniel Faraday. Not only does his mother force him to quit playing piano in order to focus on physics, but she and his father — who just might be the most evil dude in the Lost universe — conspire to send him to an island where he will be killed … by her. Most moms just make their kids eat broccoli and stop slouching. Then again, very few of the parents on Lost will be contending for a Mother or Father of the Year award any time soon …

johnnysweeptheleg’s “Lost” in a Moment:

Welcome back, Twitchy! Which is more surprising — that Faraday is back on the island or that Dharma’s headquarters can be found in Ann Arbor, Michigan, of all places?

It feels like Faraday’s on The Amazing Race. He’s on the run the entire episode. First, spending 17 seconds by Jack, waking him up to notify him that Eloise was wrong about this being their destiny, but not staying long enough to hear Jack explain the wild dream he had last night involving Kate, Juliet and the Smoke Monster’s younger sister, who is, you guessed it, smokin’ hot.

“ANTM” Recap: Let’s Go See The City

by Dizzy Miss Lizzy

Is it just me or is this season ridiculously amateur compared to seasons past?

It’s almost hard to watch. I expected some kind of learning curve, one where each week the girls get better and the competition gets stronger. But somewhere right around week two, the curve plateaued. Teyona, strong from the start, is still the only real (sort-of) model in the bunch. But her personality doesn’t stand out and her sense of fashion doesn’t inspire. Celia would be great in the industry somewhere, but not as a model. Allison has improved slightly; I think she might have 2 looks and 5 poses in her repertoire now. Too bad none of them are a “Blue Steel.”

This week, it’s time for the five remaining girls to go see five Brazilian designers and practice booking shows.

Obama Speech Bumps Penultimate “Scrubs” To Next Week

President Obama’s speech Wednesday night pre-empted the next-to-last episode of Scrubs, and creator/producer Bill Lawrence has announced that the episode — “My Chief Concern” — will now air on Tuesday, the day before the hourlong finale.

Lawrence also sounds off about the rumors of a possible ninth season, making it sound a lot more likely than what has been reported in the past. He insists, however, that the ninth season would be more like a spinoff, a la Frasier, than it would be the continuing adventures of J.D., Turk and Elliot. Many of the cast members have signed on to shoot other pilots, but none is guaranteed to be picked up for a full season, meaning they could be available for guest spots now and again. But fans should view next week’s shows as the last for Scrubs as we know it.

Weather Channel Forecast Calls For Extended Periods Of Al Roker

By RabbitEars

Famed NBC Today show weatherman Al Roker is going to be entertaining and informing people about their local and national forecasts on a second network starting this summer at a to-be-announced date. Wake Up With Al will be a new weekday series airing 6-7am ET on The Weather Channel, which Roker will be co-hosting with current Weather Channel meteorologist Stephanie Abrams.

“Simply put, Al Roker is synonymous with weather,” says Lisa Gersh, interim CEO of The Weather Channel. “He has an energy and a style that jumps off the screen, and we already know that people want to wake up with him in the morning.” (Ladies, any comment?)

Wake Up With Al explores all aspects of the day’s weather, with Roker appearing both in studio, interacting with guests and viewers, and in the field reporting on the compelling weather stories of the day.

“Over the years, I have been out covering the same snowstorms, hurricanes and tornado aftermath as the folks at The Weather Channel,” says Roker. “It is really exciting to be working [there], bringing the best weather information to people as they start their day. And now I get free baseball caps and fleeces from two of the best information networks in the world.”

The show will air live from both New York City and Atlanta, with Roker reporting from the former, Abrams the latter.

American Idol Takes It Down To Four

by Ruth Anne Boulet

Over 47 million votes came in last night. Way to participate, America!

Idol seems to be losing energy on the Ford Commercial. This one is done to the song titled ‘Energy’ and the Idols don’t have much of it. They basically get to stand still & fake run. Then stand still again. They’re even shot from a distance so they don’t have to sing. The Idols must be getting tired.

This week’s group number is “It Don’t Mean a Thing” … and I can’t tell if they were actually singing it or not. It sounded a bit too smooth, but I didn’t see any big lip-syncing catastrophes.

Contestants get sorted into 2 camps — Kris and Matt, and Danny and Allison. Ryan does the typical ‘make a contestant choose a group to belong with’ crap with Adam. Adam selects Danny and Allison. Adam chooses incorrectly. In the shock of the season, the bottom 3 is Matt, Kris and … [Read more →]

Adult Swim To Air British “Office”

Adult Swim today announced it has acquired the legendary hit BBC comedy, The Office, from BBC Worldwide. Both seasons of the two-time Golden Globe Award-winning series will begin airing on Adult Swim this summer. Adult Swim will also air The Office Christmas special.

Created, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office is about the day-to-day lives of office employees in the Slough, Berkshire branch of the fictitious Wernham Hogg Paper Company. The main character in the series, David Brent, as played by Gervais, is now firmly established as one of the great creations of comedy — and one familiar to office workers everywhere. As regional manager of the company, Brent fancies himself as a great team leader using humor to win the loyalty of his staff. In reality, he is belittling, smug, sexist, insensitive, patronizing and unthinkingly offensive. He tells crude jokes and talks in clichés and only gets away with it because his staff feels obliged to humor him. His employees are stuck in mundane, dead-end jobs, surrounded by irritating colleagues and engaged in bitter feuds over the most trivial things. Filmed as a fly-on-the-wall documentary, The Office is working life at its worst.

Since its UK debut in 2001, the series has captured the imagination of audiences around the world, with 81 broadcasters in 45 territories acquiring the UK original, and local versions being produced in the U.S., Canada, France, Chile, Russia and Israel.

Today’s announcement to add The Office comes on the heels of the addition of the BBC hit The Mighty Boosh, a deal also done with BBC Worldwide, which had its Adult Swim debut March 29.
