“Sons of Anarchy” recap: Potlatch

Not to be too bloodthirsty, but it’s about time somebody died for real on Sons of Anarchy. After all these catastrophic injuries to minor characters who easily could have been written out, one would hate to think Sons was going the way of Heroes, not letting anyone really die. I have no objection to not killing people, just please stop gravely injuring them frequently enough that we never feel they’re in any real danger.

Now this episode’s death, which had been rumored to be of a character that had been present since the beginning of the show, isn’t as earth-shattering as it could have been, but it does bring the danger back a little bit.

Speaking of danger, Tara and Jax’s relationship seems to be hitting a rough patch, with her confronting Jax about his stated desire to change the club vs. the continual violence she sees. He tells her change will take time, but how long is she willing to wait? It’s starting to hurt her at work, too, with her boss making it very clear she doesn’t approve of the bikers and low-lives always coming to see her at the hospital. Gemma does not help matters by having a “passionate conversation” with the woman, leading Tara to tell Gemma off at a hastily arranged dinner designed to soothe over the boiling tensions. Dexter: Now it’s personal

Dex and Harry, his real dark passenger

Dex and Harry, his real dark passenger

By Elaine Bergstrom

One of the most intriguing things about Dexter the series is how perfectly its creators see the internal conflict of Dexter the killer. And in Sunday’s episode, “Dirty Harry,” Dexter goes through a series of revelations, the second far more troubling than hopeful.

It begins with his reaction to the news that Debs had been shot, a deep anger that has him saying, “If Debs dies, I’ll be (pause) lost.” And there is just a hint of a question in that final word, as if he isn’t sure that what he feels is true or, more likely, amazed the he can feel so deeply about another person. TV’s “The Doctors” talk H1N1 flu with CNN’s Sanjay Gupta

On Wednesday, October 28, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta joins former Bachelor Dr. Travis Stork and the rest of the crew on TV’s syndicated The Doctors to separate the facts from fiction about the H1N1 virus and vaccination.

“This is an example of when doctors are the worst patients — I thought it was anything but H1N1 when I first got sick,” explains Dr. Gupta, who says he was shocked to learn that he contracted the swine flu while on assignment in Afghanistan.

Dr. Gupta and The Doctors doctors also discuss why kids should be a priority when it comes to the vaccination: “There are healthy kids getting infected and dying from H1N1,” reveals Dr. Gupta.

In addition to discussing the swine flu, Dr. Gupta will talk about his new book, “Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds,” and join The Doctors in explaining what goes on inside the body during the moment of death — and the cutting edge new procedures that doctors can do to prolong life as soon as a patient flatlines.

The music of “Glee”: Mash-Up

glee_mashupBy Mike Frey

There was no big group production at the end of this week’s episode, which was a bit of a letdown. That doesn’t mean, however, that “Mash-Up” was light on the music. We got five performances in all, and here’s what we thought of each:

First up is Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) doing “Bust a Move” by Young MC. So far, during Glee’s short run, we’ve already heard Schue offer his take on songs by Color Me Badd, Bell Biv DeVoe and, in this episode, Sisqó. Since we’re not the biggest fans of the genre or era that spawned those tracks, we cringed when this one began. We shouldn’t have. That. Was. Awesome. Maybe it wasn’t the most appropriate thing to interact with Quinn when he came to the line, “A chick walks by and you wish you could sex her”  — Mr. Schuester is a teacher, after all — but that’s our only complaint. Plus, who knew Schue could move like that?

“Jon & Kate”: Kate in the hotseat

What is this couple thinking?

What is this couple thinking?

By Elaine Bergstrom

With Jon out of the picture, potentially forever, Kate answers viewer’s questions in a special episode titled “Jon & Kate Plus 8: You Ask, Kate Answers”, airing Monday, Oct. 26 at 9pm ET on TLC. The network release says, “As Kate takes on tough audience questions, she relives memories of the show and gives honest answers, but will Kate be shocked by some things the audience wants to know? Will she ever get married again? Where does Kate see kids in 10 years?” But the burning questions on most fans’ minds may be: When will Jon’s name get dropped from the title? And, of course, when will those final episodes filmed with Kate and Jon air?
