“Celine: 3 Boys and a New Show” sheds new light on diva

By Tom Comi

There was a recent documentary on the controversial group the Dixie Chicks called Shut Up and Sing, but that title in my mind very well could have applied to a TV program on diva Celine Dion.

I’ve always marveled at the remarkable voice and range of Celine. There was never any question about her talent or ability to capture an audience. Something about her, though, just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it was the theatrics on stage or how she came across as somewhat insincere in interviews.

But times change, people change, and so do opinions. And that is why I am looking forward to giving her another chance by watching her special on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network tonight. Premiering at 9pm ET, Celine: 3 Boys and a New Show will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look into the singer’s life and new Vegas show (appropriately called “Celine.”)

“Celine is not only a dynamic performer, but she’s also an incredibly dedicated mother and wife,” OWN Executive VP Lisa Erspamer said on her company’s website. “This special is an inside look at her life and how she balances her amazing career with being a mom.”

Added Celine: “I’m very excited about our new show and so happy to be able to work with Oprah in the early stages of her new network. What she’s doing is amazing, and I’m honored to be a small part of it.”

Tonight’s special gives her fans a glimpse of her life on and off the stage. The mother of three boys — including newborn twins — must balance her time with her husband Rene, her children (including helping her oldest with his homework) and rehearsing for her show at Caesars Palace.

Admittedly, she’s not juggling more than most mothers do, and she’s getting paid handsomely for what she does. But she’s also one of the most gifted female pop singers ever to grace a stage, and that does make her very special. And if that means I have to accept some of her quirks on and off the stage, I guess that’s not such a bad thing.

After all, divas deserve a little slack, too, right?
