The script was written with Carell in mind (Carell also coproduced the film), but the need to find the perfect actor to play Jacob drew the producers to Gosling. â€śWe didnâ€™t necessarily associate Ryan with comedy,â€ť says coproducer Denise Di Novi, who thought the dramatic elements in the story were perfect for the actor. â€śAnd then, of course, we realized how funny he is.â€ť
