The Aquabats fly into The Hub for a bit of Saturday morning mayhem

When you’re in a band whose stated mission is to save the world from evil through your music, a TV show is one of the best weapons you can wield.

The Aquabats know this, and have decided to bring their unique brand of high action and adventure — which one member cheekily describes as “like Jason Bourne … but maybe not as good” — to the small screen.

“The trickiest part is that we’ve been such a rockin’ band for so many years and have so many millions of fans across the world, what can we do to be better than we already are?” says the always modest MC Bat Commander, who is also known is some circles as Christian Jacobs. “Television, I think, was the next stage.”

Since 1994, The Aquabats — also consisting of Crash McLarson, Jimmy the Robot, Ricky Fitness and Eagle Bones Falconhawk — have been performing quirky, costume-clad live shows that are often interrupted by some unforeseen, ridiculous enemy — like someone wearing a baloney head that explodes.

The TV show, which comes from the creators of Yo Gabba Gabba!, will feature much of the same vibe as the band travels around in its Mystery Machine-inspired Battle-Tram going to shows and fighting bad guys.

It’s part of an effort to pay homage to the zany spirit of Saturday morning Hanna-Barbera cartoons like Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest and Wacky Races that made such an impression on the ’Bats in their formative years.

“There are so many popular kids’ shows out there that just are starring kids,” MC Bat Commander says. “But when we were kids there were shows … where you could watch adults have adventures, and it was OK. Now, all the kids, I guess they can only relate to kids. We’re just going to try to show those kids out there that adults aren’t so bad. Even if we’re out of shape.”
