Telemundo bills itself as “U.S. Home of the Olympic Games in Spanish”

Yesterday, Telemundo Media, part of the NBCUniversal family, began its Spanish-language coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympic games in London with Olympic soccer coverage of Honduras vs. Morocco, Mexico vs. Korea, United Arab Emirates vs. Uruguay, and Egypt vs. Brazil.

And that was just the beginning, according to Telemundo, which is offering up as its self-descriptive tagline over the next few weeks: “The U.S. Home of the Olympic Games in Spanish.”

The network released its programming lineup for the first few days of the games, which will highlight a wide variety of sports of interest to Hispanics, including boxing, swimming, gymnastics and soccer. Along with yesterday’s qualifying soccer matches, Telemundo will be airing matches between Mexico and Gabon, and Spain vs. Honduras, on July 29.

Telemundo’s Olympic fans will also be able to watch highlights, reviews and extended analysis of the day’s games every night from midnight until 2:30am. Fans will also find up-to-the-minute news, analysis, videos and competition results at www.olimpiadastelemundo.com and www.deportestelemundo.com, and on Facebook at the fan page Facebook.com/olimpiadastelemundo, and on Twitter at @olimpiadastlmd.

The network also introduced “Sueña” (Dream), a song exclusively produced for Telemundo by music mogul Emilio Estefan and performed by novela star and singer Jencarlos Canela to celebrate the network’s coverage of the world’s most important sporting event across all its shows and platforms.

In addition, Telemundo announced former Olympic athletes Ramón Rivas and Nicolás Massú will join Telemundo’s award-winning team of expert commentators and analysts lead by renowned sports commentator Andres Cantor, to present the basketball and tennis matches, respectively. Rivas was the second Puerto Rican player to join the NBA, with the Boston Celtics, and represented his country at the Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Massú was recently named Chilean Olympic icon by the British edition of Time magazine and represented Chile in three Summer Olympics: Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. A two-time medalist, Massú is the only tennis player who has been awarded the gold medal on singles and doubles matches at the same Olympic Games.
