Fans of paranormal reality shows may have gotten a little bummed in the last week, with the season ends of Syfy’s School Spirits on Aug. 1, and Haunted Highway last night. But don’t give up the ghost! Syfy has all your creepy needs ready to be fulfilled some more starting tonight with the return of its hit series Paranormal Witness, which airs its second season Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT starting tonight.
Season 2 of Paranormal Witness will feature 12 episodes — twice as many as in its inaugural season, when it ranked as one of the Top 10 new original cable series in the fourth quarter of 2011 among adults 18-49 (No. 7). In Season 1, it averaged 1.7 million total viewers.
Once again, the series will combine reenactments along with interviews of people who claim to have experienced paranormal phenomena, along with, in some cases, footage of the events, as seen in tonight’s premiere episode, “Man in the Attic.” This episode interviews a woman who recalls the time she spent as a single mother in a California bungalow in the late 1980s, when she became plagued by strange sounds, glowing lights (we see a photograph she allegedly took of the lights) and a recurring apparition of a very grumpy old man. When things take a terrifying and violent turn, she calls in a paranormal team who try to document the events with cameras, and we see some of the footage they claim to have captured (their cameras also captured the woman’s horrific ’80s hairstyle of that time). The episode is as effectively creepy as most of the other Paranormal Witness episodes, and similar Syfy shows, have been, and works as a nice little ghost story. Again, with nothing definitive proven.
Other upcoming episodes of Paranormal Witness this month include:
“The Brooklyn Haunting” — Aug. 15, 10pm ET/PT. A family moves into a dilapidated Brooklyn townhouse. A basement excavation reveals a strange door leading to a dirt-filled room. When the kids go inside to explore, they awaken a half-century-old phenomena that leaves the family paralyzed in their beds, and begins a haunting that they claim included night terrors, ghoulish whispers, physical attacks and a mysterious wedding dress.
“Capitol Theatre Haunting” — Aug. 22, 10pm ET/PT. A Salt Lake City police officer is thrilled to be posted to graveyard shift guard duty at the prestigious Capitol Theatre as his first assignment. But, night after night, the cop and his partners say they find themselves investigating slamming doors, burning smells and other strange happenings in the supposedly empty building.
“The Dybbuk Box” — Aug. 29, 10pm ET/PT. A look at a supposedly cursed box found in Portland that inspired the upcoming feature film The Possession (in theaters Aug. 31).
Later Season 2 episodes will include “The Abduction,” about logger Travis Walton’s alleged UFO experience that became one of the most well-known alien abduction reports (featured in the film Fire in the Sky); and “The Real Life Haunting in Connecticut,” another look at the famed story (turned into a book and movie) of the Snedeker family, who claimed to have been tormented by demonic presences.
