The U.S. Women’s National Team has certainly been worth watching in the London Olympic soccer tournament. They’ve pulled some big games out of the fire, including the 4-2 comeback win vs. France and Alex Morgan’s header to beat Canada 4-3 in the last 30 seconds of the semifinal match.
Next up, the USWNT will take on another familiar foe, Japan, in the gold-medal match at Wembley Stadium on Thursday. Japan defeated France 2-1 to make it through to the gold-medal game. Japan topped the USWNT in a penalty shootout to win the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship match. In the last six months, the USWNT’s record against Japan in various, smaller competitions is 1-1-1. If the USWNT plays a lick of defense, it might not have to rely on late heroics to avenge the World Cup loss and win its third straight Olympic gold medal.
The USWNT vs. Japan women’s soccer gold medal match airs live on NBC Sports Network Thursday, Aug. 9, at 2:45pm ET.
