Telemundo to broadcast “The Great Golden Soccer Final” – Mexico vs. Brazil men’s Olympic gold medal match

This story was updated at 2:50pm CT on Aug. 9.

This Saturday, Aug. 11, at 9am ET, Telemundo will broadcast the gold medal Olympic men’s soccer match between Mexico and Brazil — what the network is calling a “dream final” since it is a historic match widely anticipated among soccer fans and U.S. Hispanics. The winner will take the Olympic gold medal for the first time in their country’s history.

Telemundo has been getting dream ratings of its own in its coverage of Olympic soccer, and of the Olympics in general. Its broadcast on Tuesday of the semifinal soccer match between Mexico and Japan ranked as the highest telecast for the time period (Tuesday 12pm-2pm) in the history of the network, averaging 1.4 million total viewers and 713,000 adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. In addition, the game ranked as Telemundo’s highest-rated soccer event in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Called by Andres Cantor, the match delivered more than four times the average of the 2008 Beijing Games’ entire delivery among total viewers.

Telemundo says it has doubled the 2008 Beijing Olympics audience among total viewers during the first 11 days of the 2012 London Games, based on Nielsen numbers. The Olympic coverage especially tailored to the Hispanic audience has delivered a total cumulative viewership of 16 million total viewers through its first 11 days of coverage — 20 percent more than the Beijing Olympics over the same period.

And it sure looks like Saturday’s gold medal final between Mexico and Brazil should continue Telemundo’s dream.

“The Great Golden Soccer Final,” as this matchup is being billed by Telemundo, is being played at iconic Wembley Stadium in London and will be presented again by Andres Cantor, together with Sammy Sadovnik and Mexican soccer player Manuel Sol. The match will also be live-streamed at Telemundo.com. Telemundo will be airing a special program about the “Great Golden Final” on Aug. 10 at 7pm ET/PT (6pm CT) that features analysis, expert commentary and feature stories about the match.

“For Mexico, this is a dream come true, and Brazil will be fighting for the only world soccer title that has eluded them in their history,” said Andres Cantor. “We will see the likes of Marco Fabian and Neymar give their best. It will be a close game, and there is no doubt that it will mark a defining moment in the history of soccer for both countries.”
