If baseball seems even more unpredictable this fall, it’s because MLB planned it that way.

MLB fast-tracked an expanded 10-team playoff system for 2012, looking to re-create something like the final day of the 2011 regular season when eight games with postseason implications were played. The new system adds another wild-card team to each league, with a one-game playoff to determine which team advances to the Division Series.

2012 MLB playoff teams:
AL East Champion: N.Y. Yankees
AL Central Champion: Detroit Tigers
AL West Champion: Oakland A’s
AL Wild Card 1: Texas Rangers
AL Wild Card 2: Baltimore Orioles

NL East Champion: Washington Nationals
NL Central Champion: Cincinnati Reds
NL West Champion: San Francisco Giants
NL Wild Card 1: Atlanta Braves
NL Wild Card 2: St. Louis Cardinals

The AL and NL Wild Card games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, with the Cardinals at the Braves (5pm ET) and the Orioles at the Rangers (8:30pm ET) on TBS. The winners advance to the best-of-five-game Division Series beginning Oct. 6. For this season only, the format for Division Series games changes from 2-2-1 to 2-3, with the wild-card winners playing the first two games at home. TBS airs the bulk of Division Series games, and MLB Network airs live postseason action for the first time with two games Oct. 7 and 10. The League Championship Series begin Oct. 13, split between TBS (AL) and FOX (NL). The World Series begins Oct. 24 on FOX at the home of the NL champion, thanks to the NL’s 8-0 win in the All-Star Game. World Series Game 7, if necessary, is scheduled for Nov. 1.
