“Hawaii Five-O” viewers to choose ending to tonight’s episode

Fans of the hit CBS show Hawaii Five-O have nobody to blame but themselves if they don’t like the ending to tonight’s episode, because CBS is allowing viewers to determine how it will conclude.

Watch the full Hawaii 5-0 episode at the CBS web site.

In what CBS is calling a first in television history, everybody tuning in tonight at 10pm ET/PT will have the opportunity to choose amongst three suspects that they believe killed a university professor. The options are the professor’s boss, a student who was busted for cheating and a teaching assistant.

Viewers can cast their vote during the show on CBS.com and/or Twitter, where they can use the following hashtags to choose the suspect they want to see taken down: #theBoss, #theTA or #theStudent. The votes will be added up live as the show is airing, and the most popular ending will be the one that airs. Interestingly, separate voting will be available for Eastern/Central and Pacific time zones, which means we could have entirely different conclusions on the two coasts. For those unhappy with tonight’s winning finale, you can visit CBS.com to see the other two.

With many networks, this might come off as a desperate gimmick to draw up viewers. That’s hardly the case here, though, because Hawaii Five-O routinely draws great numbers as the only drama on CBS’s vaunted Monday night comedy block — which includes How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Two Broke Girls and Mike & Molly.

“I’ve always felt the most fun aspect of watching a mystery is trying to figure out whodunit,” executive producer Peter Lenkov told CBSnews.com. “Now the Hawaii Five-O viewers will actually get the chance to tell us who they think committed the crime and we will listen. I love that our dedicated and attentive fans will actually play a part in resolving our story.”
