HBO renews Game of Thrones for Season 4

HBO did not waste much time in picking up its dramatic fantasy hit Game of Thrones for a fourth season following the series’ impressive Season 3 debut this past Sunday, March 31. Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming, made the announcement today.

According to early data provided by HBO, the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere on Sunday topped the series’ highs, with record viewership for both the 9pm ET/PT airing and the gross audience across its three plays. At 9pm, the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere averaged 4.4 million viewers, outperforming (+4%) the previous high of 4.2 million viewers from the Season 2 finale.

HBO says the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere improved 13% in comparison to last season’s premiere of 3.9 million viewers. Across the three plays for the night, 6.7 millon viewers tuned in, surpassing the Season 2 debut night of 6.3 million viewers by 7%.

Last season, Game of Thrones had an average gross audience (HBO linear plays + HBO On Demand/HBO GO + DVR) of 11.6 million viewers.

Game of Thrones Season 3 continues Sundays at 9pm ET/PT on HBO, with nine more episodes remaining. In this Sunday’s (April 7) episode, titled “Dark Wings, Dark Words,” Sansa (Sophie Turner) says too much. Shae (Sibel Kekilli) asks Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) for a favor. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) finds a way to pass the time. Arya (Maisie Williams) runs into the Brotherhood Without Banners.
