Sure, it’s fun to sound cool when you’re predicting the winners for the Academy Awards and the Grammys, but it’s even cooler to say you knew the nominees way back when. That’s the idea behind the NewNowNext Awards, which bestows the culturally envied “gay stamp of approval” upon pop culture icons and the up-and-coming acts everybody soon will think are cool.
It’s hard to argue with the track record, as NewNowNext has been responsible for Lady Gaga’s first televised performance, and has honored such then-unknown actors as Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games). So if you tune in to this year’s telecast (the sixth in this awards’ history), in a few months time maybe you can be the coolest person at the cocktail party.
Aisha Tyler hosts the event, with performances scheduled by Ke$ha and Tegan and Sara. Notable winners include Selena Gomez, who will receive the Triple Play Award (because she’s an actress, singer and all-around famous person), Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas gets the Always Next, Forever Now award and Kylie Minogue will be bestowed the Dance Floor Hero.
Other award categories include Best New Do, Coolest Cameo; TV You Betta Watch; Next New Mega-Star, Next Must-See Movie; Hottest, Sexiest Ink; and Cause You’re Hot. Some presenters include Chelsea Handler, Naya Rivera, Jai Rodriguez and a host of others.
