Telemundo premieres “La Voz Kids” on May 5

After a lot of build-up and buzz over the last few months, with hosts and coaches being named, Telemundo‘s singing competition La Voz Kids will make its premiere May 5 at 7pm ET on the network.

Playing off the global success of the hit singing competition series The Voice, La Voz Kids puts the spotlight on children, featuring talented singers between the ages of 7 and 14 competing for a chance to win a recording contract and a cash prize to support his or her education.

Young vocalists from California, Florida, New Jersey, Arizona and Puerto Rico, among other locations, hit the La Voz Kids stage to display their best singing qualities in front of coaches Paulina Rubio, Prince Royce and Roberto Tapia. The singers are asked to perform across a variety of musical styles, including rancheras, corridos, bachata, salsa and boleros, among others. The participants share with the audience how they got into the competition, as well as their stories and emotional moments.

Hosted by Daisy Fuentes and Jorge Bernal, La Voz Kids will feature three stages of competition. The first stage begins with the blind auditions. Then there are the battle rounds, followed by the live performance shows.

During the blind auditions, the decisions from the music coaches are based solely on voice. The coaches have their backs to the singers and don’t get to see them. If a coach is impressed by a participant’s voice, he/she pushes a button to select that person for his/her team. At this point, the coach’s chair will swivel so that he/she can face the participant who has been selected. If more than one coach pushes a button, the power then shifts to the participant to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes a button, the participant is eliminated from the competition.

Once the teams are set, the battle rounds begin. Coaches will develop their teams, giving them advice along with help from celebrity advisers. During these rounds, the coaches will pit three of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience.

In the final performance stage of La Voz Kids, the top participants from each team compete weekly against each other. The TV audience and the coaches will decide who will stay in the competition. In the end, one will be named the winner of La Voz Kids and get the recording contract and cash prize.

On May 4 at 7pm ET, the night before the show’s premiere, a special edition of Telemundo’s Al Rojo Vivo con María Celeste will feature a preview of La Voz Kids, including interviews with coaches Paulina Rubio, Roberto Tapia and Prince Royce, as well as hosts Daisy Fuentes and Jorge Bernal.

La Voz Kids airs Sundays at 7pm ET on Telemundo beginning May 5. (UPDATE May 21: Telemundo has announced that starting with the May 26 episode, La Voz Kids will change its time slot to 8pm ET on Sundays.)
