Sneak preview: “Avengers Assemble” on Disney XD this weekend

Can we all agree now that it’s Marvel’s world and we’re just living in it? In addition to basically owning the multiplexes for the past few years — and for the foreseeable future as Phase 2 of its cinematic universe rolls out — Marvel is now invading TV in a big way. There’s the live-action Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. coming to ABC this fall, and this weekend viewers can get an hour-long sneak peek (that’s two episodes) of Avengers Assemble, an animated take of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Iron Man (a.k.a. Tony Stark), Captain American, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, and the Black Widow are all on the roster, along with new edition the Falcon. In this version, the superhero gang has separated due to internal conflicts, but when two powerful enemies combine forces and seemingly kill one of the Avengers, Tony Stark takes it upon himself to bring everybody back together. Much of the drama, in fact, stems from these mega-beings with mega-egos try to get along, and more specifically, who is the best choice to lead them. Certainly it wouldn’t be the reckless billionaire Tony Stark, would it?

Also, Hulk can talk. And I don’t mean just saying “smash” and calling things puny. The green dude actually speaks in full sentences and everything. Not quite sure how this reconciles with him being the embodiment of pure rage and everything, but it’s certainly not the first verbal incarnation of the character and, besides, it’d be pretty dull if he just stood there and grunted all the time.

There are many who are still lamenting the recent end of Disney XD’s The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and while it does seem a bit puzzling to do a reboot so fast, this is more like a rebranding. Not all that much has changed, but with the title change it brings everything more in line with the movie universe (although this series should be considered a separate entity) and some of the vocal characterizations are a marked improvement, most notably Adrian Pasdar as Tony Stark.

The sneak preview this weekend is in anticipation of the series’ July 7 premiere.
