Emmys 2013 winners, losers: “Breaking Bad,” “Modern Family” win top awards

Two words that best sum up Emmys 2013: “Breaking Sad.”

It was three hours filled with tributes to fallen stars, odd reminders of 50-year-old national tragedies and a victory lap for AMC’s much-loved but little-awarded drama Breaking Bad. Neil Patrick Harris acknowledged his propensity for hosting gigs with a cute sketch involving his How I Met Your Mother costars, and decided to insert a mid-show musical number that probably played a lot better in rehearsal.

In addition to the much-discussed extended tributes to James Gandolfini, with Edie Falco presenting, Jean Stapleton (Rob Reiner), Jonathan Winters (Robin Williams), Gary David Goldberg (Michael J. Fox) and Cory Monteith (Jane Lynch), one of the winners was also featured in the “In Memoriam” tribute, Homeland writer Henry Bromell, whose wife went to the podium and delivered an emotional acceptance speech.

Emmys 2013

On the much lighter side of things, Michael Douglas delivered the cheekiest line of the night in accepting his lead-actor award for Behind the Candelabra. He thanked his costar, and fellow nominee, Matt Damon, calling the Steven Soderbergh-directed (he also won, btw) a “two-hander.” The crowd tittered at that, but that was nothing compared to his next line to Damon: “You deserve half of this. Do you want the bottom or the top?”
