Baseball’s strangest injuries 2012

In honor of the start of the 2013 World Series, here’s the rather extensive roundup of the weirdest injuries in baseball 2013:

Zack Greinke, Dodgers: Dodgers starter Zack Greinke fractured his left collarbone in a bench-clearing brawl during a win over the Padres at Petco Park in April.

Brian Cashman, GM, Yankees: Cashman broke his leg after landing awkwardly while skydiving.

Doug Melvin, GM, Brewers: Brewers general manager Doug Melvin was stung by a small scorpion in his condo during spring training in Arizona and spent three hours in a local hospital. Melvin was trying to use a tissue to squash what he thought was a harmless insect, but was stung on the middle finger and experienced numbness in his arm.

Ron Roenicke, Manager, Brewers: It was a rough season for the Brewers front office health-wise, as Roenicke was taken to a Chicago emergency room when his back froze up in his hotel room early in the morning.

Ryan Mattheus, Nationals: Relief pitcher Ryan Mattheus broke his right hand and ended up on the DL after punching his locker out of frustration.

Joel Peralta, Rays: Peralta suffered a stiff neck in spring training while picking up lunch from a Cuban eatery. Peralta felt his neck pop and stiffen while he was exiting his Camaro.

Jhonny Peralta, Tigers: Peralta missed a game because he suffered from an allergic reaction to clam chowder.

Ian Kennedy, Diamondbacks: Kennedy missed his scheduled start after suffering a cut on his finger from washing dishes.

Gio Gonzalez, Nationals: Nats pitcher Gonzalez told reporters he got a cut on his forehead from playing with his French bulldog, Hollywood. “I hate her, and then I look at her in the face and I love her again,” Gonzalez said.

Elvis Andrus, Rangers: Andrus spent his off day in spring training getting a large tattoo on his arm, then was scratched from the lineup the following day because the tattoo caused muscle soreness.

Clay Bucholz, Red Sox: Bucholz was scratched from a start due to soreness in his shoulder caused by his daughter sleeping on it.

Casey Kotchman, Marlins: Serves Kotchman right for trying to help. During spring training, he sliced a finger and scraped another while trying to prevent a machine that throws infield pop-ups from falling over. “It’s probably not every day where you get your hand caught in a pitching machine, on a pop fly,” he said.

Carl Pavano, Free Agent: Pavano ruptured his spleen when he slipped and fell while shoveling snow in his driveway in January.

Bryce Brentz, Red Sox: Red Sox prospect Brentz was left off the spring training roster because he shot himself in the leg while cleaning a handgun.

Anthony Swarzak, Twins: “When [Swarzak] was up here for TwinsFest, he was messing around with a couple guys and cracked a couple ribs, so he’ll be out a month,” Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. “He was wrestling around. It was some horseplay. He was out with a couple friends and the team and cracked a couple ribs fooling around. It wasn’t a fight or anything. It was just bad judgment wrestling around.”

Casper Wells, Phillies: Wells was put on the DL with ongoing vision problems and had been playing with blurred eyesight. “He’s also experienced some dry eye in the outfield,” interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. “They dry up when he tries to blink. He tries to blink to gain focus. He’s really battling something. It finally got to the point where he didn’t feel right about that.”

Francisco Liriano, Pirates:Liriano had broken his right humerus on Christmas Day while slamming himself into a door in an attempt to frighten his kids, who were in the next room.”

Michael Taylor, A’s: Taylor sliced his finger on a light on the dugout ceiling while throwing out his gum during spring training.

Colby Rasmus, Blue Jays: Blue Jays outfielder Rasmus was hit in the left eye with a warm-up toss between innings. Rasmus was taken out of the game and taken to a hospital. He ended the season on the DL.

Tanner Scheppers, Rangers: Scheppers claimed he was randomly attacked in Cleveland by a gang of men (though conflicting reports say Scheppers instigated a fight at a bar). Scheppers received a black eye and was forced to miss a game.
