First Lady Michelle Obama hosts Puppy Bowl “training camp”

Ahead of Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl X this Sunday, hype for the annual special was amped up recently when First Lady Michelle Obama and the First Family’s dogs Bo and Sunny worked to “train” some of the pups for the big game.

Animal Planet says it was inspired by the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to overcome childhood obesity, and wanted the Puppy Bowl pooches to be ambassadors for canine fitness and fun for the whole family.

“It was so much fun to see the Puppy Bowl X Team work out at the White House,” said Michelle Obama in a release. “This year’s pups showed us that getting active and lapping up plenty of water are important ways to keep our bodies healthy and energized. And as our family has seen with Bo and Sunny, going outside to walk and play with your pet is a perfect way to get moving and have some fun every day.”

The 13 puppies taking part in this training camp were from various shelters and rescue groups. Bo and Sunny lined the dogs up for practice on the White House South Lawn to run through tire and tackle drills, hone their ball and chew-toy skills, play fetch with the kids and take water breaks. This was all followed by a nap in the grass.

Puppy Bowl X premieres Feb. 2 at 3pm ET/PT on Animal Planet.
