Dancing With The Stars Recap: Season 18, Disney Week

Dancing With The StarsTonight on Dancing With the Stars, Donnie Osmond’s purple socks return to the ballroom as tonight’s guest judge. The Season 9 celebrity champ is part of tonight’s Disney Night, and if you recall, Donny has a Disney connection — he sang “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You,” in Mulan.

Unlike last week, where partnerships for “The Switch Up” were a well-guarded secret, this week, the dances and song choices have been revealed. Also revealed was that Disney Animation will be used throughout tonight’s dances.  This will either go very well, or very, very poorly.

Something that I hope doesn’t continue to go poorly is this season’s music. Harold Wheeler and his band were outstanding; I miss his big band sounds from season’s past. This year’s strange experimental music has rendered famous songs unrecognizable and last week alone had two musical mishaps. How long before we can start petitioning for Harold’s return?

I am flying high on how well Erin Andrews has been doing this season.  She is a polarizing figure, but I think she’s asked tough and embarrassingly prying questions that we’ve all been dying to have answered. If only the answers were as straight forward as the questions.

Tomorrow, the big buzz will be about who went home on Dancing With the Stars. After three weeks without a true elimination, someone will be going home tonight!

To start the night,Drew and Cheryl and Charlie and Sharna were both revealed to be safe. Drew was floored by this news.

Dancing With The StarsDrew Carey and Cheryl Burke          1-800-868-3409
Dancing the Quickstep to “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin
A quick peek of the Genie was cute, and Cheryl makes a beautiful princess Jasmine, but her heavy tan makeup was a bit dark. But, once the Genie started dancing between Cheryl and Drew, the return turned got pretty embarrassing.
Len:  “This routine was zippidy doo dah! The performance had zip, the technique was do dah”
Donny: “I am judging on performance.”
Carrie Ann: “you loose focus and you make a strange face.”
Bruno: “You’ll be better next week”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 7, Len: 7, Donny: 7, Bruno: 7, a 28 out of 40,

Dancing With The StarsCharlie White & Sharna Burgess         1-800-868-3412
Dancing Jazz to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins
This song perfectly matches Charlie’s upbeat personality. I’m glad we didn’t have to see any animated horses and instead we had the jug band members join in the dance at the end. Charlie has such fast feet and wonderful body control. I wonder if Charlie can sing, because he could certainly have a career on Broadway.
Donny: “I was so worried you were going to drop the cane, and then you dropped the cane!”
Bruno: “it was almost perfect in every way.”
Carrie:  “You are a wave of happiness!”
Len: “That was eye popping, jaw dropping and show stopping!”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 9, Len: 10, Donny: 9, Bruno: 9, total 37 out of 40.

The next couple announced safe is Amy and Derek.
Also safe from elimination, Danica and Val.
NeNe and Tony are in jeopardy.
Cody and Whitney are in jeopardy (Screaming girls everywhere.)

Dancing With The StarsDanica McKellar & Val Chmerkovskiy          1-800-868-3403
Dancing the Quickstep to “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast
Danica makes a darling Belle. She looks radiant in yellow and Val is just wild enough to play the Beast. Add some dancing tableware, animated candles and a giant champagne bottle sitting stage right to complete the cluttered set.  Honestly, I wasn’t watching the dance as much as I was waiting for it to pop or explode, or do something crazy.
Bruno:  “You tamed the Beast!”
Carrie Ann:  “That was so good, I feel like you mom!”
Len: “It had speed and control, care and flair.”
Donny: “I played Gaston on Broadway, you knocked it out of the park!”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 10, Len: 9, Donny: 10, Bruno: 10, total 39 out of 40.
Danica is just so adorable.

Dancing WIth The StarsAmy Purdy and Derek Hough          1-800-868-3410
Dancing the Waltz to “So This is Love” from Cinderella
Amy “This whole experience makes me feel like a princess.” But she’s finding ballroom quite hard without her legs.  Why is she wearing pink? Isn’t pink Sleeping Beauty’s color? Nevertheless, the dance was sweet.  It’s hard to be fantastic when you’re doing the waltz, but she was good.
Carrie Ann: “I hope that Disney makes their next princess like you.”
Len: “You drifted across the floor like smoke through a keyhole”
Donny: “I cried because of what you can do. You are a contender.”
Bruno:  “You’ve never looked more beautiful, you’ve never looked more glamorous.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 9, Len: 9, Donny: 10, Bruno: 9, total 37 out of 40.

Dancing With The StarsCody Simpson and Witney Carson          1-800-868-3408
Dancing the Samba to “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from The Lion King
The Simba Samba was much better than I’ve seen Cody dance in weeks. It was fun and cute. I really, really liked the side by side dancing. And I thought the costuming was incredibly hot, Cody’s hair actually looks like a mane, instead of ridiculous. Witney looked feirce as always, she is such a little sexpot.
Len: “You captured the party feeling of the samba. Well done”
Donny: “Did you enjoy the dance?  It didn’t come across.”
Bruno:  “Listen to the good fairy, I tell you. Simba brought the samba out of Africa.”
Carrie Ann: “I felt the power of Cody.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 9, Len: 8, Donny: 8, Bruno: 9, total 34 out of 40.

Dancing With The StarsNeNe Leakes and Tony Dovoloni          1-800-868-3401
Dancing the Foxtrot to “Cruella De Vil” from 101 Dalmatians
After some Backstage Drama with Tony (who NeNe thought preferred last week’s partner Candace) they were able to pull it together, but after the dance, she’s overemotional.  She knows she’s at risk for elimination.
Donny: “It was like hot lave and then cold as ice.”
Bruno: “NeNe, you mean, mean, mean, nasty girl. You put some bump and grind into the foxtrot.”Carrie Ann: “You can rock the villain!”
Len: “You think you want a divorce and you realize the folly your ways.  You two are a match made in heaven.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 9, Len: 9, Donny: 9, Bruno: 9, total 36 out of 40.

Dancing With The StarsJames Maslow & Peta Murgatroyd          1-800-868-3402
Dancing Contemporary to “Let it Go” from Frozen
Awwww, James brought a big fan with special needs to LA because he couldn’t take her to prom due to the demands of the show. So Sweet!!!
I’m a sucker for contemporary dance. And theirs was splendid! Really hard lifts. They also had the most appropriate use of animation. The use of the animated floor was really awesome.  Definitely worth watching again.
Bruno: “That was a contemporary blockbuster! You dance with such sincerity”
Carrie Ann: “I was touched and cried the whole time.”
Len: “That would melt the coldest heart, even mine.”
Donny: “Amazing choreography. James, I’m amazed by your athleticism.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 10, Len: 10, Donny: 10 Bruno: 10, total 40 out of 40. The first perfect score of the season!

Dancing With The StarsMeryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy          1-800-868-3406
Dancing the Samba to “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book
I agree with Maks, the Samba is supposed to be sexy, not silly. When I think Sex, first of all, I don’t think Disney Cartoons, and second, I don’t think Jungle Book.  And again, another over-tan person!  Maks, You don’t need to be that tan. But you look extra hot without your facial hair.
Carrie Ann: “When you dance, you dance like you’re part of one body.”
Len: “Great entertainment.  Well done.”
Donny: “That was thoroughly entertaining.”
Bruno: “Jungle Book? I call it Jungle Fever.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 9, Len: 9, Donny: 9, Bruno: 9, total 36 out of 40.

Dancing With The StarsCandace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas          1-800-868-3407
Dancing the Samba to “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid
Oh Candace, I really adore you, but I’m also embarrassed for you. That was so many shades of terrible. First of all the red wig. Candace can’t do red hair. Her entire costume looked uncomfortable and showed a lot more skin than I’m sure she was happy to reveal. Poor Mark, had to dance with crab claws on his hands. And he acted like this wasn’t a problem for him! What a professional. I thought there were too many dance moves that you’d give to someone who’d never danced before. Arm circles, and shimmies;  Those are the filler moves that you’d use if you had to dance in place while animated fish swam around. Unfortunately, there were no animated fish, so those moves were planned to look that dorky. At this point, I think Candace has danced her last dance. If this is true, she was fun to watch.
Len: “That was so much fun. It was irresistible.”
Donny: “What I just saw was so promising.”
Bruno:  “I really liked what I saw, It was the rebirth of Venus.”
Carrie Ann: “You get nervous and you become a whole other dancer.”
Judges Scores: Carrie Ann: 8, Len: 9, Donny: 9, Bruno: 9, this week’s total 35 out of 40.  Candace was so thrilled at her scores.

After her Dance, Candace was told that she and Tony are in jeopardy
Meryl and Maks are safe.
James and Peta are safe.

Who will be voted out?

The next couple announced safe is NeNe and Tony!

Who is leaving, Candace or Cody?

Cody and Whitney were announced to be leaving. Holy cow?!? Teen girls are crying in the audience. Candace is stunned to have survived one more week. I am stunned that Candace survived, and I wish her the best of luck. Obviously 30-something women are better at voting than teen girls. Booyah!

  1. Was anyone really watching Charlie? He was amazing and I can’t believe that with the difficulty and timing involved in that performance he didn’t get the 10’s. The cane was negligible and didn’t cause much interruption to the program. That was the most difficult dance of the night and it didn’t get the credit. Donny needs to chill. His comments were mundane and added nothing to the show. Charlie was brilliant and it didn’t show in his scores.
