This season of The CW’s Supernatural has been a little out of control, especially with the fallen angels, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) doing a lot of fighting—not that that’s anything unusual. What is unusual about this episode is that it seems as though Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) has decided to take matters into his own hands and come up with his own version of a story.
Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are still on the hunt for Abaddon (Alaina Huffman). Their research gets interrupted, though, when Castiel (Misha Collins) calls with news that Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett) is still up to no good and helping Metatron. Sam and Dean track Gadreel down from all of the angels that he has been killing. Remember when Gadreel had tried to take over Sam’s body while he possessed him? Well, now they have Gadreel trapped, so let’s see what they can get out of him. They don’t get much out of Gadreel, so Dean is left with him and Sam is off to see if he can find more on Gadreel.
Castiel finds a group of dead angels in an abandoned warehouse with another angel. Metatron has been recruiting and, you’ve probably figured this out, whoever refused to join him was killed. Later he heads back to his hotel room and we get a little surprise.
Now for all of us who thought that Gabriel (Richard Speight Jr.) was dead and never coming back, this sneaky trickster shows up once again and comes to Castiel for help. It turns out that Gabriel was in hiding in heaven until Metatron showed up and cast all the angels down. And, of course, Gabriel is seeking revenge on Metatron and wants to help Castiel take him down. Is the trickster really done playing games? Of course not! Castiel does play into Gabriel’s story and they both leave the hotel together when Castiel finally figures out that Gabriel had been playing one of his tricks by making Castiel think that what was happening was real when it wasn’t. Where does that leave us? Well we don’t know whether or not Gabriel is really alive. And for Castiel, he’s ended up trapped by Metatron. Metatron has, of course, been writing this whole episode, and whatever has been happening so far is because he’s written it into existence.
Metatron hears word that Sam and Dean have Gadreel, so he finds Sam and offers him a deal: a switch of Castiel and Gadreel. Of course, the next day when the trade is actually happening, Sam and Dean don’t think that Metatron is going to be honest about his deal and tries to trap him. Metatron gets quite the laugh out of it when they try to trap him, but he keeps his deal and lets them know that this only happened because he wanted it to happen. How much longer are we going to have to watch Metatron play God? How are we to tell what’s real and what’s just being controlled by Metatron? Well, all I can say is I am definitely tired of Metatron and hope that Sam and Dean can figure out something soon. However it looks like their hands are going to be tied up elsewhere in this preview of next week’s episode of the CW’s Supernatural:
Best episode this year. There was even a bit of Dean/Cas flirting. Keeping thinking there was something in the message Gabe left on Deans’ voice mail.
