“Apple Mortgage Cake” Is Served Sunday On UP

UP TV’s charming original movie Apple Mortgage Cake premieres Sunday, April 20 (7pmET/ 8pmPT) and tells the true story of how one woman’s creativity, determination and fantastic apple cakes saved her home from foreclosure.

Apple Mortgage CakeThirty-five years after she sat in her grandmother’s kitchen learning baking and life lessons, Angela Logan (Kimberly Elise) sits again in her grandmother’s kitchen (now hers) facing the home’s foreclosure. Her mother’s medical and funeral bills depleted her savings, a divorce stole her trust for others, a storm and a flood made several areas of her home uninhabitable, a shady contractor stole her money and her car just died. And Angela, who juggles several jobs and volunteers as a career counselor at the local mission, still has three hungry teen sons who need shoes, food and books. Despite these personal trials, Angela is unbroken; she bravely bakes her grandmother’s famous apple cake because as her grandmother always said, “Cake makes people happy. One bowl, one mixer, and the right company, and you’re set for life.” Baking is her therapy.

And, baking becomes her salvation. Angela has 10 days to come up with $4,000 or she loses her home. Angela realizes that if she can bake 100 apple cakes and sell them to friends and neighbors for $40 each, she can raise the money to save her home. As word of her “bake sale” spreads through her friends, neighbors and community, the media takes notice. News of the woman selling her “Apple Mortgage Cakes” to save her home inspires others who are facing or had faced financial hardship. Soon, orders come in from all over the world and Angela realizes that not only has she saved her home, she’s changed her life.

As soon as she read the script, Apple Mortgage Cake’s star Kimberly Elise knew she had to play Angela. “Apple Mortgage Cake is an inspiring story for all of us during a crisis; to look inside ourselves to find solutions, to find our gifts/talents and see what we have within us that we can use to enable us to solve our situation.” Elise adds, “Angela’s optimism, positivity and her beautiful soul are very inspirational, and these are exactly the things that I look for in a project, things that will uplift, inspire and teach people.” The real-life inspiration for Apple Mortgage Cake, Angela Logan, makes a cameo in the movie as “Sheila,” a director at the mission where Angela volunteers.
