The Vampire Diaries recap: “Promised Land”

At the end of last week’s The Vampire Diaries from the CW, the episode left us wondering if the travelers were going to succeed in their plan, and if they do, how that would affect everything else in Mystic Falls. Not only have the travelers been making some drastic progress with their plan, but they also kidnapped Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev). Of course, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has taken things into his own hands to find out where the travelers have taken them. Caroline (Candice Accola) is also helping him, but unfortunately, they have no idea where the two witches, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu), are to help them—whatever those two are up to, it can’t be any good. We finally see them, and they’re just as worried as everyone else about what the travelers are up to. The travelers want to get rid of all the magic in the town, and of course, that means theirs, too. So what’s their solution? Kill the doppelgangers … this isn’t going to be pretty.

Damon is relentless against the travelers, and his next plan is to take the bodies of the travelers who currently inhabit other people’s bodies in the town. Damon being Damon, he leaves a lovely note in the cave so that Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) knows who took the bodies. Because of that Markos goes right to Damon’s house. However, Damon’s plan doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. Markos could care less about the bodies that have been taken because apparently there seems to be numerous amounts of travelers that are all fighting for the same thing. You’d think that Damon would be able to take Markos out, but he’s used Stefan and Elena’s blood to channel the power of all of the travelers and now the spell to get rid of all magic has begun.

Meanwhile, we get a glimpse of what’s happening to Stefan and Elena. The travelers have them chained up in dark rooms draining the blood out of them. It’s not clear totally what Markos intends to do with them, but one of the travelers seems to be working secretly against him because she goes to free Stefan so he can get Elena. We find out the next day that the traveler who freed them is the one whose husband is in Tyler’s (Michael Trevin) body. As Stefan and Elena are hitchhiking, she pulls up and offers them a ride—this is an unexpected situation. On their way back to Mystic Falls they are stopped by Liv and Luke. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve really had enough of these two. They kill the traveler that was helping Stefan and Elena and now they have to decide which of the two doppelgangers to kill. Before they can do that, though, the spell has started to take effect and their magic has worn off. Because of the undoing of the magic all of the other supernatural beings have started to go back to what they were before they turned into vampires — specifically to their deaths before they turned. Their only chance now is to get ahead of the spell as quick as they can, but that can only last for so long.

While all of that is going on we still have to worry about Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Ever since things have been messed up on the other side of the veil he has been able to stick around and pester everyone until he is alive and well once again. I mean, he was promised a way back by Damon, but his timing could not be any worse. Bonnie (Kat Graham) has been trying to figure out a way to fix the veil and bring Enzo back the same way that Markos was able to bring himself back. She can only do this with the help of a traveler who knows the same spell that he used. They try to get to the traveler who helped Stefan and Elena earlier, but she disappears in the veil and they literally lost their last chance. If that’s not enough, the traveler inside of Tyler’s body decides it’s time to take revenge for the death of his wife and kills one of the doppelgangers—Stefan.

The season finale of The Vampire Diaries is next week, and let’s just hope that Damon and Elena can figure out something to fix everything. Check out the preview from the CW below:
