In Syfy’s Dominion, we see archangels whose names may sound familiar depending upon your upbringing, but they aren’t often engaged in the most angelic behavior. The sci-fi/fantasy series is based on the 2010 feature film Legion, in which the archangel Gabriel waged a war of possession against mankind. Archangel Michael chose to side with humanity against Gabriel.
Dominion is set 25 years after the events of Legion, with Alex Lannen (Christopher Egan), the child seen at the end of the film, revealed to be the “chosen one” that had been whispered about. Alex is a soldier in Vega (formerly Las Vegas), one of the fortified cities humanity has created to protect themselves from Gabriel’s armies.
The pilot introduces not only some interesting themes with real-world relatability (like how much freedom you would give up to ensure your safety), but also combines some really interesting mixes of religion, mythology and fantasy. Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who stars as David Weel, head of one of the powerful families in Vega, found that appealing.
“I must admit, I had no idea when I first started reading the first script,” Head told us. “It’s more about the infighting that’s left on the ground when the threat is apparently gone. But the threat rears its ugly head again. … [The series] has transcended that and gone into a fascinating world of mythology and legend.”
Among those legends are the various angels, many of which have no love for humans and are out to kill them, which may seem unusual to some viewers. But Head had some perspective.
“What is an angel in one religion,” he said, “is thought of as a demon in others. It’s an interesting concept.”
Dominion debuts with a 90-minute series premiere June 19 at 9pm ET/PT on Syfy. The series airs regularly in an hour block Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT starting June 26.
