Who Do You Think You Are? returns to TLC July 23

Think you know everything about your favorite celebrities? TLC’s intriguing NBC import Who Do You Think You Are? unearths familial facts and secrets that famous folks didn’t even know themselves.

Having already delved into the sometimes dark, sometimes delightful personal histories of Sarah Jessica Parker (who discovered that her 10th great-grandmother was accused in the Salem witch trials), Rob Lowe (who learned his fifth great-grandfather fought for the British in the American Revolution but died a patriot), Paula Deen (whose third great-grandfather was a slave owner) and others, the show’s emotional new season includes Valerie Bertinelli (Hot in Cleveland), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Minnie Driver (About A Boy) and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) journeying back to their ancestral homelands here and abroad to explore fascinating branches of their family tree.

In Wednesday night’s season premiere, Hannibal‘s Cynthia Nixon delves into her father’s lineage and discovers torment and courage the likes of which she could not have imagined.

The network will also air encore episodes of the Emmy-nominated series — featuring Lowe (7/30),  Lisa Kudrow (7/30), Gwyneth Paltrow (8/6), Brooke Shields (8/13), Vanessa Williams (8/20), Rita Wilson (8/27) and Reba McEntire and Tim McGraw (8/27) — in tandem with the new hours.

A new season of Who Do You Think You Are? premieres Wednesday, July 23 at 9/8CT on TLC.
