Hard Knocks 2014: HBO flies with the Atlanta Falcons

The games don’t count, but NFL football is NFL football. Preseason games with unrecognizable players lining up for most of the snaps still get fans fired up for the season and draw TV viewers.

While dropping a week from the preseason and adding another week to the postseason is smart (and inevitable), it won’t happen this year. But one wrinkle to this preseason is that the NFL will experiment with longer extra-point kicks during the first two weeks. The ball will be spotted at the 20-yard line (making the kick equal to a 38-yard field goal) to add some interest to an otherwise boring, automatic play.

The preseason kicks off with Hall of Fame festivities Aug. 2 in Canton, Ohio, where Derrick Brooks, Ray Guy, Claude Humphrey, Walter Jones, Andre Reed, Michael Strahan, and Aeneas Williams will be enshrined in a ceremony on ESPN2 and NFL Network. On Aug. 3, the Giants and Bills play in the Hall of Fame Game on NBC. CBS, ESPN, FOX and NBC air two preseason games each, with NFL Network airing the other games live, on demand or tape-delayed.

HBO’s Hard Knocks is also back, and the NFL didn’t even have to force a team into doing it. The Atlanta Falcons, 4-12 last season, graciously volunteered to have an NFL Films crew stalking their training camp fields and facilities. The series airs for five consecutive Tuesdays beginning Aug. 5.

Things kick off for real in the regular-season opener with the Packers at the Seahawks Thursday, Sept. 4, on NBC. New this year, CBS will simulcast Thursday Night Football with NFL Network for eight weeks beginning Sept. 11. CBS will be able to air some NFC games and FOX will also have some AFC matchups in the late Sunday afternoon window. NBC’s Sunday Night Football will have its flexible schedule options starting earlier, now in Week 5.

  1. Really appreciate this information, particularly it’s clarity. As a Packer fan, I like to know what is happening in the entire league.

  2. when will the nfl catch up with the times. it is 2014, but every time you watch a nfl game you go back in time..if you pay attention to ALL football announcers…all white players are super duper stars, and all black player are faceless criminals…Ray Rice hit his wife and all these people want him put in prison, or at least punished more than the 2 game punishment that he got. Then you have Riley Cooper a white wr calls black people niggers.well, lets look at what happened to cooper after his mishap…he got the starting job away from Leshaun Jackson(wow)…and he’s gotten one of the biggest raises in contract in the league

    • How about Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Jamaal Charles,RG3(who is a spoiled whining self absorbed chump),Russell Wilson etc. Do the world a favor and think before you open your mouth pushing your own personal agendas please.

    • I think you need to put down the crack pipe. Maybe you need to stop watching football, because I don’t see it. Tired of accusing everybody of using the n-word when that’s all the accusers use.

      • @ D Rad, I agree. I’m white and the minority where I work. My coworkers don’t go dropping the N word. Might have heard it twice or three times in four years. Not an issue. Guess the racist bastards out there can’t accept change. Everyone should be treated equally good or bad, but we know many people in media don’t get treated equally. It’s just life. Get over it and stop being a racist, RDY!
