“Iyanla: Fix My Life” airs a special report from Ferguson

The shooting and killing of unarmed teen Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, has been the focus of much of the nation’s attention, especially in the wake of protests that arose over the situation. Among the many media personalities who converged on the town to cover the story was Iyanla Vanzant, the ordained minister and life coach who hosts her own series on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network called Iyanla: Fix My Life. A special episode of the series premiering Aug. 26 and called Iyanla: Fix My Life — Special Report: Healing in Ferguson, follows Iyanla’s trip to Ferguson.

In the special, Iyanla embeds herself in the local community and works to empower citizens by helping them formulate a plan for peace and healing. Iyanla visits the protest area and memorial, reaching out to individuals affected by the tragedy to hear their stories and helping them find ways to move past their anger.

According to a release about the program, Iyanla brings face-to-face Feguson police chief Thomas Jackson and Michael Brown’s uncle, pastor Charles Ewing (both pictured), and together they discuss the need for peace to give the system time to work. Iyanla also hosts a community discussion with leaders and citizens; sits down in a church minutes from the shooting site with a group of young men, many of whom profess to be gang members; and makes her way at 1am past National Guard checkpoints and police to join a peaceful protest.

Iyanla: Fix My Life — Special Report: Healing in Ferguson airs Aug. 26 at 9pm ET/PT on OWN.
