ABC’s new comedy black-ish is about a wealthy black family in Los Angeles dealing with cultural and racial identities in America. Dre (Anthony Anderson) is an ad executive who gets a surprise when he’s promoted at the office. Meanwhile, Dre has a crisis when his 13-year-old son Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner) wants a bar mitzvah. Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne also star.

What’s It All About? A “mythical and majestic black family” in an affluent white L.A. neighborhood is trying to keep it real without really knowing what real is anymore. Dre (Anderson) is an ad executive in line for a promotion and his biracial wife Rainbow (Ellis Ross) is a doctor. Dre’s dad (Fishburne) was on the front lines of the civil rights movement, but Dre’s kids are growing up in a world of privilege and he fears they are losing touch with their heritage — 13-year-old Andre Jr. (Scribner) wants a bar mitzvah and wants to be called “Andy.” While a lot of the humor comes from “white people like stuff like field hockey and black people like stuff like grape soda” jokes, black-ish is a frank, fresh and funny exploration of how race relations have evolved in America.
