South Park Season 18 premiere takes on Washington Redskins name

South Park Season 18 begins this Wednesday at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central. Never a show to shy away from controversial topics, the series delves immediately into the hot-button issue of the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins team. That name is recognized by many, inside and outside of the Native American community, as an offensive racial slur, while others — including team owner Dan Snyder — claim otherwise and view it as a historical term of respect.

south-park-redskinsA preview clip from the South Park Season 18 premiere (called “Go Fund Yourself”) was released yesterday online (and, apparently, on air in D.C. during yesterday’s game between Washington and Philadelphia, in an epic bit of trolling). In the clip, Cartman gets a visit from Dan Snyder, as well as what appears to be Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III and coach Jay Gruden. Cartman and the boys have launched a Kickstarter campaign for a business that they have called The Washington Redskins. However, Snyder and company are outraged, and, ironically, claim that Cartman’s use of the name is “derogatory” and “offensive” (but only because they themselves are already are using it, and despite the fact that the trademark for the name has been pulled, which Cartman points out).

Season 18 of South Park begins Sept. 24 at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central, with the “Go Fund Yourself” episode. South Park Season 18 episodes will be available to stream in HD on Hulu and SouthPark.cc.com the day after Comedy Central premieres. Episodes are also available for purchase in SD and HD on Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, XBOX Live, Google Play, Sony Entertainment Network and Vudu.
