Tonight on Dancing With The Stars, “The Switch Up”

Tonight on Dancing With the Stars, the remaining nine celebrities will swap professional dance partners for “The Switch Up.” Who will be able to handle the change and who will fail? At the end of the episode, another couple will be eliminated (based on last week’s judges scores and America’s vote).

The “Switch Up” pairings and styles of dance are:

  • Jonathan Bennett and Peta Murgatroyd dancing the Jitterbug
  • Tommy Chong and Emma Slater dancing the Mambo
  • Bethany Mota and Mark Ballas dancing Hip-Hop
  • Janel Parrish and Artem Chigvintsev dancing Burlesque
  • Alfonso Ribeiro and Cheryl Burke dancing Flamenco
  • Sadie Robertson and Derek Hough dancing the Charleston
  • Antonio Sabato Jr. and Allison Holker dancing Bollywood
  • Lea Thompson and Val Chmerkovskiy dancing Broadway
  • Michael Waltrip and Witney Carson dancing Disco

My guess is that the voting phone numbers will stay the same for the celebrities as they have been thus far this season. DWTS Season 19 voting phone numbers

Pop mega-star Jessie J will perform a medley of her amazing hits to open the show, including her songs “Bang Bang” and “Burnin’ Up.”  The multi-talented, multi-platinum artist will also fill in for fellow Brit Len Goodman and serve as this week’s guest judge alongside Julianne Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Jessie is a great performer and she has collaborated with a lot of huge names (including Ariana Grande and Niki Minaj on “Bang Bang”) so she knows about working well with others.

I was sad to see fashion designer Betsey Johnson get voted off last week; she brought such a youthful joy to the dance floor. She is known as fashion’s wild child, but each week, she looked more and more refined and turned out to be quite elegant. Betsy’s lifelong love of dance was always so evident and the gratitude she exhibited when she was announced as last week’s eliminated contestant shows what a gracious competitor she is. She and her partner Tony Dovolani will be missed.

How relieved did Jonathan Bennett look last Monday when he and partner Allison Holker were announced safe? The look on his face is priceless! He had a rough week of dancing (his flat-footed Mean Girls-inspired samba to Jingle Bell Rock & Milkshake did not go over well with the judges and earned a paltry 24 out of 40). Even America gave Jonathan a 6 out of 10, have we ended our love affair with Aaron Samuels? It was not Jonathan’s best performance and seemed too down-tempo for his unstoppable energy. The Jitterbug should be a better use of his natural bounce and positive vibe, and hopefully fans of #TeamJOker voted en masse Jonathan and Allison will be reunited next week.

How many people tried to do “The Carlton” after last week’s show?!? I did, and I’m pretty sure that’s why my back hurts so much. Alfonso Ribeiro must be made of rubber bands to be able to move like that! That performance was absolute perfection, Alfonso is such an amazing performer.  Quicker dances definitely take advantage of his tap and Broadway dance backgrounds. In the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see Alfonso perform a slow dance like the Waltz (because we know Alfonso isn’t going anywhere!)

What do you think of “The Switch Up”?  Is it a fun twist or is it an annoying interruption in our love affairs with our favorite celebrity-professional couples?
