Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe answers our 7 Questions

Outlander star Caitriona Balfe credits bestselling author Diana Gabaldon for the series’ large fan base, but she’s far too modest to admit that fans are just as obsessed with her and her costar Sam Heughan, who bring the beloved characters of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser to life. Outlander will return for the second half of Season 1 beginning Saturday, April 4. In the new episodes Claire’s “beginning to realize how dangerous the world that she’s in now is. We’ll see her learn, she’ll definitely learn from these experiences,” Balfe tells. In a continuation from our earlier interview, the delightful Balfe also answered our “7 Questions With …” column.

Caitriona_Balfe1. You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. Which ones do you choose?
I definitely get The New Yorker, I definitely get Rolling Stone and then I get a fashion mag. I don’t know which one. It depends. Depends on who’s on the cover.

2. If your TV carried just three shows or networks, what would they be?
I love True Detective, which I was very late to the party because I was shooting when it came out, but amazing. My really good friend is on Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so I watch that because I have to see him. What else? I mean, there’s loads, but what else am I into at the moment? I just started watching The Affair.

3. What are three things you have to have in your fridge or pantry?
Avocado, coconut water and chocolate.

4. What’s a movie that you can watch over and over again?
Manhattan or Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Annie Hall, or all three just in rotation. I never watch anything else.

5. Tell us about a time when you were starstruck.
I saw Patricia Arquette at the People’s Choice Awards and I was definitely starstruck. I think she is incredible. I just love who she is as a person, and the career that she’s had and how she just does whatever she wants. She’s a total renegade, but such a beautiful badass woman.

6. How far are you in reading the Outlander book series?
I’m now on book two. I took a break after work. I’d read book one before Season 1. I had to take a little Outlander break. Not fully, but just a little space. Now I’ve started reading book two. I’m so excited. It’s such a jolt. You start with Roger and Brianna. I’m like wait. Who are these people? Who are you?

7. You have an incredible fan base — you won the People’s Choice award this year — what wows you about your fans?
I think we’re still all a little in shock. It’s the fact that we’ve just done a half season. These fans predominantly were fans of Diana’s books. The fact that they got behind the show and they’re so passionate and they’re so generous with their time. They’re so generous in they’ve raised so much money for all the charities that different ones of us support. I don’t know, it’s just mental. It really is. I’m trying to be very nice and poised about it, but really inside I’m like, this is insane. It just feels amazing. As an actor you first of all want to get a job. You just want to work. You want to be able to do your craft. Then to get on something that, first of all people love or that these fans love, and then that they’re so great. I don’t know, it’s brilliant.
