RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 episode 5 begins with the shock heard round Drag Race fans – the fallout of the elimination of Trixie Mattel. Pearl seems to be over this whole getting picked on thing. Everyone back home loves her! Why does Ru keep asking for more? What does that even mean? Come on Pearl, Miss Fame figured it out without a meltdown. Get it together.
We get a mini-challenge this week – making paper versions of iconic star outfits. The challenge was inspired by a Drag Race fan that used to make paper versions of the queens runway looks. The queens work in pairs – one to drape the paper on the other queen. The winners are the team of Mrs. Kasha Davis & Katya and their version of Bjork’s infamous swan dress. Yay!
These pairs carry forward to the main challenge – the queens have to present intros to silly award show categories (The DESPY Awards). As winners of the mini-challenge, Mrs. Kasha Davis and Katya are the co-hosts of the entire evening. The other teams are Max & Pearl, Miss Fame & Violet, Ginger Minj & Kandy Ho and Kennedy & Jaidynn.
Some of these pairings will be funny. Others…? Kennedy, are you really a comedy queen cause you won that one challenge that one time? The queens will get help and feedback from Kathy Griffin.

As expected, when Ru does his head-games walkaround, he pays special attention to Pearl. There’s a stare-off that at first I thought was edited to look like a long stare-off, but based on Pearl’s reaction, it may have actually been a long, uncomfortable stare. Max is certainly uncomfortable.
Note to producers – I also watch Face Off, as I know others do as well. I totally recognized the background music during the end of that scene. I’m expecting MacKenzie & her pouty “tell us about the bottom looks, Glen.”
After getting her titties twisted by Ru, Pearl leaves the workroom for awhile, but we don’t get any T about it. She seems to be all fine & had a revelation of some kind off camera. But WE DON’T GET ANY ACTUAL INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED! WHY DOES SHE HAVE A TURNAROUND? i DON’T NEED NITTY GRITTY DETAILS BUT GEEZ, CONTINUITY! Grrrr…..
All of the queens get changes to their routines in their feedback from Kathy Griffin. She’s trying to get the girls to be less shady and more originally funny.
Ginger Minj-ism: I used to think I was funny until I met Kathy Griffin. I’ll have to call my Mom so she can tell me how good I am.
Max continues her reign as Miss Congeniality – Pearl thanks her for hanging in there & helping her get through it.
We get a Moment of Learning about Miss Fame. I never noticed that one of her big tattoos is a chicken. There’s a reason — she showed chickens as a kid. Fame gives us many important tips in raising chickens. She even showed off her chicken voice. At first I thought it was a sound effect, but it’s her. It’s awesome. They didn’t show any pictures of Fame with what I call Phyllis Diller chickens, but I totally see her showing Phyllis Diller chickens (I guess they’re Polish chickens, but I think my name is better).
When Fame shares all of her chicken knowledge with Violet, we see Violet being a little less one-note bitchy. Fame is warming up to her too.
Isaac Mizrahi is this week’s guest judge. (“It’s a planet, darling.”) Did I tell you about that one time I was in Brooklyn & saw the Rufus Wainwright opera and I had better tickets than Isaac Mizrahi? He didn’t come back after intermission. Shady.
The award show banter is amusing but Katya has the best acceptance speech. Anytime the great American artist Bob Ross makes it into an acceptance speech is a good day. You’ll have to watch the episode to see what else she said.
In the end OF COURSE Pearl and Max win the main challenge. So should we expect to see Pearl rise up over the rest of the season? Wouldn’t it be great if all life-long challenges could be wrapped up in reality TV time frames? Also let Max get away with having grey hair again. Clocked, Drag Race.
In the end it’s Mrs. Kasha Davis and Kandy Ho in the bottom two. It seems like a pretty even fight between them, but by all right Kandy should go since she’s been in the bottom two before. After last week’s elimination I don’t know what to believe anymore.
But OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT’S HOLY! Mrs. Kasha Davis is sent packing for no good freaking reason. Was she the strongest? No. But overall she was stronger than Kandy Ho. I guess this is what Ru meant by “You have no idea” when she talked about season 7. Bye Mrs. Kasha Davis. Your awesome mug will be missed.
What are you thinking about this season’s eliminations?
They stink. Candy Ho should be gone. Ru has lost his everlovin’ mind. Sad.
I think Ru doesn’t care at all anymore about deceiving us into thinking this show is not scripted.
Trixie called this show “RuPaul’s best friend’s race” after being eliminated. That should let you know what this show is about.
Of course a gay/black/hiv+/ugly/old/bitter… couldn’t possibly have any good thing to offer.
