Daredevil Season 2 coming to Netflix in 2016

NOTE: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT SEASON 1 OF “MARVEL’S DAREDEVIL”

Last night, just as I was completing my enjoyable viewing of the first season of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, I learned the equally exciting news that the series has been renewed for a second season. Daredevil Season 2 will premiere on Netflix in 2016.

The return will come with some notable changes, as Doug Petrie (Buffy the Vampire SlayerAmerican Horror Story) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy) will serve as show runners. According to Netflix, the two “worked closely with Steven DeKnight and Drew Goddard.” DeKnight was show runner for Season 1, and Goddard created the series, writing two episodes including the pilot, and bowing out as show runner last year. Goddard will continue as an executive producer, along with Petrie, Ramirez and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

Here’s hoping all of the cast returns (would especially love to see guest star Scott Glenn return as Stick). Daredevil was an exceptionally well-cast show in its first season, and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. As we ended Season 1, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) was behind bars, but it was indicated that bringing him to trial could take a while, so perhaps we’ll see new Daredevil foes in the meantime? I’m sure the show would love to keep Fisk (and the outstanding D’Onofrio) in the mix somehow, and a Kingpin like him could certainly pull some strings from prison to make Matt Murdock/Daredevil’s (Charlie Cox) life uncomfortable, even if he’s not the immediate threat. Of course, with so many people on his payroll, it probably wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine Fisk getting off, or even escaping prison, but it might be good to keep him in the background for a season (don’t want to have too much of a good thing). Maybe we’ll see Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho) return. She was the only one of Fisk’s original cabal to get away with her life, and before departing after the destruction of her heroin factory, made a cryptic reference to where she actually comes from originally, and it wasn’t China. Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), Fisk’s love, has also fled town. Before leaving, she put on the engagement ring Fisk gave her, so she’s clearly dedicated to the man. Perhaps she’ll be involved somehow if Fisk escapes, or maybe she will want vengeance on the people who put him away (she did seem to develop, or let loose, a vindictive streak as her relationship with Fisk went on, seeming especially intent on making those who poisoned her suffer).

Daredevil also has an interesting other rogues gallery to choose from, and it would be especially cool to see someone like Bullseye make an appearance (though, if the series follows the comics, Bullseye could pose a special threat to Karen, played by Deborah Ann Woll).

Speaking of Karen, also at the end of Season 1, we see her and Matt getting closer (there’s also a moment in the finale when Matt touches her hand, and Karen offers a sly grin; perhaps she recognizes him as the masked man who saved her earlier in the season?). It seemed like Karen had some feelings for Matt from the start, although there was also some flirtation and nights out with Foggy (Elden Hanson) going on. As Season 1 ended, it sounded like Foggy might try to get back with old girlfriend Marci (Amy Rutberg), so things may finally be open to follow in the footsteps of the comics by having Matt and Karen be together.

Whatever happens, the long wait until 2016 now begins. In the meantime, if you haven’t watched Daredevil Season 1, do so. It’s highly recommended, and not just for comic book fans.
