Where is Documentary, “The Man With No Penis”?

The saying may be, “Don’t judge a book but it’s cover,” but in my world, I follow my own saying — “DO set your DVR based on the title.” So when I heard of the Discovery Life documentary, The Man With No Penis, first I checked to see if it was an April Fool’s joke, and second I called “dibbs” amongst my coworkers.

I love watching any series with an intriguing title especially when medical documentaries introduce viewers to fascinating people with incredibly rare medical conditions. I adored the funny and charming story of Jonny Kennedy who suffered from the rare, and ultimately fatal condition of dystrophic epidermolysis in the award-winning British documentary, The Boy whose Skin Fell Off. I also watched both Treeman documentaries and any fascinating medical story I can find on the series, Diagnose Me.

Now, it seems, that days before its intended June 13 airing, the provocatively titled special has been moved from Discovery Channel to sister-network TLC, and then removed from that network’s broadcasting schedule. I can’t find the documentary listed on wither channel’s broadcast schedule.

I have contacted both Discovery Life Channel and the private PR firm assigned to the doc, and will update with what I learn.

In the meantime, here is the press release first released by Discovery Life Channel on May 20.

Filmed over 12 months, this intimate film charts Andrew’s emotional journey as he confesses to old friends, past lovers and even his current, unsuspecting, girlfriend. “I had only told about 20 percent of them the truth,” Andrew says. “It is difficult to explain to a new girlfriend. Once, I was punched in the face when I told a girl. I guess she felt like I had lied, but it’s not something you can say right away.”

Andrew Wardle was born with an Bladder Exstrophy, an extremely rare affliction that caused the organ to grow outside of his body. Doctors were able to fix his bladder, but he never developed a penis. Growing up, Andrew struggled with depression, substance abuse, and at one point even contemplated suicide. Now there is a new hope on the horizon and he’s found happiness in his life.

Recent medical advancements in gender reconstruction surgery could make it possible for Andrew to have a fully functioning penis built from the skin, blood vessels and nerves in his arm. Cameras follow Andrew through a series of medical consultations and procedures as he prepares for the next chapter of his life. He meets with patients who have suffered from similar conditions and undergone the same surgery, and he plans for a recovery with his loving girlfriend by his side.

The Man With No Penis provides viewers with astonishing, unique and poignant insight into the problems Andrew has faced throughout his life and the surprisingly positive outlook he holds because of it.

  1. The info on Fios guide states, ” Andrew Wardle is the only person in the UK to be born without a penis.” The only person?

  2. I also tried to program this on my DVR when I read of this a couple of months ago. I always found the claim that he “sleep” with a 100 women and few of them figured out that he had a penis to be preposterous. At this point I suspect that the network has figured out that the documentary is a fraud and are going to let it quietly die.
