Scream episode 3 recap: Who’s next?

Scream-EP3-PhotoOn the third episode of MTV’s Scream, things are off to a killer start. We are transported back to the night of Halloween in the year 1994 where two brutal murders occurred at the hands of none other than Ghostface. Noah is yet again telling a horror tale to a reporter who is interested in the recent murders that might be connected to Brandon James. He lets the reporter know that no one puts on a mask and commits a murder like that just once. Instead of trying to pin Tyler as the new murderer, they need to figure out who the next victim is.

Jake is seen going into the woods with a shovel like he’s searching for something buried. Could it be a body because that’s the perfect hiding spot? Jake digs up what appears to be a box that was buried in the ground. However, it seems that whatever he was looking for isn’t in there. That would be the perfect location to hide some incriminating evidence,  such as the murder weapon. I wonder if this has anything to deal with the stuff Will was worried about Jake having and not getting rid of — very suspicious!

At Rachel’s wake, Audrey finds her way into Rachel’s room. It’s clear that Audrey is still having a rough time dealing with the death of her friend and love. She stares up at the ceiling fan where they found Rachel, and proceeds to place her belt on the fan as a noose. It’s a good thing Emma came in to stop Audrey when she did. When Emma questions whether or not Audrey was about to hang herself, Audrey replies by telling her she was trying to see if Rachel’s death was realistically a suicide. Let’s hope that was the honest truth. Emma begins to tell Audrey how Rachel’s death wasn’t a suicide. She tells her that she overheard the sheriff talking about opening a murder investigation. Audrey is glad to hear that she was right about Rachel not killing herself, but questions who would want to kill Rachel.

Turns out Jake was looking for cash that he, Will and Tyler had buried. That’s an odd place to put it, but I guess no one would ever think to find money in the ground. Jake warns Will that Tyler took the money, but Will lets him know that he got to it before Tyler could. The two start to talk about some operation they have going but Will can’t afford to stay in business any longer due to a lack of funds. Jake has rich parents, so he doesn’t feel the same struggles as Will. When Jake asks where the money is, Will tells him to shut everything down and he might be able to find it. While the two were talking I felt so lost and confused as to what they were talking about. All I know is it isn’t good because Will is worried that the cops could link it back to him and he’ll lose everything. Any guesses as to what they’re talking about?

Scream-EP3-TextEmma tells Audrey about her creepy stalker and how he acted like he knew her and wanted to tell her the truth. While Audrey doesn’t think there’s a strong connection between this mysterious person and Rachel’s murderer, she does advise Emma to tell her mom. Audrey then tells Emma that she should message the stalker back to see what he has to say. If this is the person that killed Rachel she needs to know why. Since Emma received a direct message from him, he opened up a line where she can message him back. Emma does message him back by telling him she knows about him killing Rachel and wants to know why. That’s probably not the message I would send to some creepy person who is stalking me and might be a murderer but hey, Emma has some serious guts.

Emma learns that Kieran has the Brandon James files at his house since his father is working on them, and is immediately interested in taking a peek. Kieran is nice enough to bring all the files over to Emma’s house for her to take a look. Right before Kieran is about to leave he finds something that says the whole altercation between Emma’s father and Brandon started when Brandon confronted Emma’s father’s girlfriend. At the time the girlfriend in question was Emma’s mother. Emma finds out that her mother went by Daisy and that Brandon was obsessed with her mother. Could you imagine how weird it would be to figure out that a murderer was obsessed with your mom?

Now that Emma knows a bit more of the truth, she questions her mother about why she never told her the truth about being Daisy. Her mom tries telling her that she’s trying to put all of that behind her, but both she and Emma know she can’t do that. Emma tells her that she can’t let that go because someone else knows. When Emma mentions about getting another phone call from this mysterious man, her mom gets a bit worried. Emma thinks her mom is just trying to protect herself rather than trying to help Emma because she’s not telling the whole truth. Emma knows the sheriff is looking for her father, but has no idea why and it doesn’t seem like she’ll get an answer.

Instead of working on their school project, Noah and Riley are too busy hooking up for the first time. I guess for some, video games drive straight to the heart. Things go from steamy to scary when Riley receives a text from Tyler asking for her help. I think it’s an obvious setup but Riley seems more hopeful than I am.

Emma gets another phone call from her creepy stalker who lets her know that he received her DM. He tells her that he’ll answer her questions when he’s ready but questions whether or not her mom gave her the answers she was looking for. When Emma warns that she’ll call the police, the voice lets her know that he’ll gut her mom if she tells a soul. He tells Emma that all he wants is to gain her trust and that it shouldn’t be too hard for her to accept his trust since he’s the only one telling her the truth around town.

Riley rallies up the gang and lets them know that she got a text back from Tyler asking for their help. She texted him back and he told her that he didn’t do it but he’s afraid that no one will believe him. We have an advantage as the audience because we got to see his head fly into the jacuzzi right before Nina died. Unless that was all just a setup and he used a very convincing prop. Brooke voices her opinion and lets the group know that she doesn’t believe him at all. In fact, she also got a text from Tyler around the same time as Riley. She told him to turn himself in, which is probably what I would’ve done. Emma seems to be the only smart one because she lets the group know that this all has to be a setup. She doesn’t think it’s Tyler texting them because of what’s been recently going on with her creepy stalker. She tells the group about the mystery man and how they’ve been able to send texts through her number. Emma begs the group to not trust this person and go to the cops but Riley is strongly against what Emma suggests. She thinks she knows Tyler and he’s just really scared right now. She blames Emma if anything happens to Tyler- you’re a bit too late for that.

When the gang goes to the cops they confirm that they can trace the texts back to his account. The Sheriff thinks it’s their only chance at bringing him in so he asks for the teens’ help. He asks for Riley to text him back and ask to meet up in a public location so that they can finally bring Tyler in. Riley is afraid that she’s betraying her friend but if he’s innocent then he’ll have nothing to hide. Let’s just hope the cops are quick enough to take action if they need to.

The cops take their positions as they wait for Tyler to arrive. They have a cop playing the role of Riley while she waits at the station. A man comes out of a vehicle and approaches the undercover police officer. She immediately takes him to the ground as the other officers come in to surround him. The guy who arrived isn’t Tyler or Ghostface, he’s just a stranger. He tells the cops that he was only doing this because he was paid $200 by some guy online to meet up at this location and deliver something to a girl. The message was in his front pocket as the sheriff reached for it. When he opened it, it had a photo of Ghostface with “Nice try” written underneath it. I told you it was a setup guys — Ghostface isn’t stupid!

Scream-EP3-BrookeBack at the station Brooke received a text from an unknown number letting her know to meet her at a hotel. She thinks it’s from her teacher who she is having an affair with, Mr. Branson. When Emma’s mom lets the girls at the station know that Tyler didn’t show up, Emma notices that Brooke went missing. Brooke arrives at the hotel to find nothing but a sexy little outfit for her to put on. Instead of questioning where Mr. Branson is, she goes to put the outfit on.

Emma and her mom head out looking for Brooke but they can’t find her or get in contact with her. Emma sends her stalker another DM asking for him to please not hurt her friends. She immediately gets a response from the weirdo that says Emma was the one who wanted to done with him in the first place, so now he’s moved on to someone else. He tells her she has to choose between the good girl or the bad girl. Emma tells him she can’t make such a choice but tells him not to hurt Riley. By Emma saying that, the creep knows Emma’s made her choice on keeping the bad girl alive. Unfortunately that means the good girl, Riley has to die.

Riley gets another text from Tyler questioning why she went to the cops. Scream-EP3-KnifeShe tells him that she didn’t have a choice, but trusts him and asks for him to meet her at the station. Riley gets a text back saying that he trusts her too but asks for her to meet him out in the back of the station. Since she’s blinded by her feelings, Riley goes to the back of the station to meet up with who she thinks is Tyler. She walks over to a parked car only to be greeted by Ghostface. Riley puts up a good fight as she starts running and yelling for help. When she notices she’s trapped by a gate, she starts to climb up the stairs that lead to the rooftop. Sadly, Ghostface can still climb in his mask and that’s where he slashes Riley up pretty good. The entire time I’m yelling, “Run, Riley, run!” as she gets to the rooftop. My heart breaks when Riley receives a video call from Noah. She answers but is only able to tell him to call 9-1-1 and on her dying breath, she tells him she can see their stars. At least she didn’t die alone?

What were your thoughts on this episode of MTV’s Scream? I like how this episode had a lot more action than the previous episodes. I’m not saying I want everyone to die but since this is Scream, it’d be nice to see some more suspense going on. What do you think Jake and Will were arguing about with the money? All I know is Nina has something to do with it but you would think now that she’s dead it would make things easier. Why do you think the cops are looking for Emma’s dad? Do you think Emma made the right choice by telling the stalker to not kill Brooke? Who do you think is going to be killed next? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Scream airs Tuesdays at 10/9CT on MTV.
