The nasty and delicious of Craig Robinson’s “Mr. Robinson”

Mr. Robinson

It turns out that Craig Robinson’s (The Office) new NBC comedy has more in common with its star than just a name. In Mr. Robinson, Robinson plays a musician who substitute teaches a Chicago high-school music class to pay the bills.

“I came up in Chicago, taught in Chicago, and I have a band named The Nasty Delicious,” Robinson says of the similarities between him and his character. “And of course I’ve got a crush on [costar] Meagan Good. That’s all real life.” The rest, Robinson says, is the imagination of writers and executive producers Mark and Robb Cullen.

Mr. Robinson walks the line between family friendly and really risqué. The lyrics to The Nasty Delicious’ “Chocolate Muffins” imply much more than baked goods. “My act is PG and R at the same time,” Robinson says of material inspired by his standup music/comedy performances. “It’s definitely adult, but I think when you bring music into the situation and jokes, it makes everything more palatable in terms of the family audience.”

While Mr. Robinson doesn’t have all the answers, it does address the age-old disciplinary dilemma that bedevils students: Do you take detention or do you take a dodgeball to the face? Robinson told us his choice, and he’s sticking by it: “Ball to the face! Ball shot to the face, no trouble. Boom! I’m good.”

Mr. Robinson premieres Wednesday, Aug. 5, with back-to-back episodes beginning at 9pm ET/PT.

  1. Uh sorry squeeze….echoing Disapointed comments below. References to doing lines off of toilet seats and penis references is for low life’s. Strongly suggest Squeesh that you elevate your sensibilities and try to recognize this garbage for what it is……..trash.

  2. Uh,what? I’ve seen the first four episodes of this show, and I love it. Nice to see a prime time show with African-Americans in the lead again, and not yet another lame show about young white hipsters and their boring love lives/issues.

    • Also, the show is actually realistic and funny, on top of that. You need to explain exactly why this show is garbage, instead of just saying, “It’s garbage,” because that dosen’t tell anybody why you think it’s garbage. The fact that Robinson plays and sings all the music on the show himself is also a real plus.

  3. This show is demonstrative of all the garbage on television today.

Ryan Berenz, the author of this article is just a piece of crap shilling for his employer, writing a garbage review.

    Sorry folks, ain’t buying it.

  4. Absolutely repulsive and over the line this show is… I hope the writers children rebel and “do lines off the toilet seat”??? and enjoy “Rex” the penis ???! Are you kidding me? What kind of content is this for family time… Network TV with kids watching, you should be ashamed. Showing kids that it is OK to act and talk horrible in a classroom… FAIL. Pull the plug for our children!
