Rachel Bloom Sparkles In The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

There are two schools of people: those who wish that life could spontaneously erupt into a musical production number, and those who don’t. “And those people who don’t should all die in a fire,” deadpans Rachel Bloom, the star, co-creator and executive producer of The CW’s hilarious new comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In the series, Bloom’s character — you guessed it — launches into elaborate musical productions, including one where she soars above a crowd, riding a giant pretzel.

Before the snack food roller coaster, Bloom’s character Rebecca Bunch is a successful New York attorney who uproots her life on a whim and moves to suburban West Covina, Calif. — “Only two hours from the beach; four in traffic!” — to follow an unwitting former flame. In this unlikely fish-out-of-water story, Bloom describes her TV alter ego as a “neurotic, anxiety-ridden, kind of Woody Allen-esque persona going into Southern California, where it’s almost like depression is against the law.”

And as Rebecca builds a new life in her adopted hometown, she struggles with the reality that her actions may be less than sane. “Everyone feels crazy when they are in love at some point,” says Bloom. “So what does this term mean, ‘crazy ex-girlfriend’? How does one come to embody this stereotype?”

The show promises two to three original musical numbers per episode, and Bloom and co-executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) have assembled a talented cast that includes Broadway veterans and a Disney prince (because Hans in Frozen is technically a prince, despite a few rather un-princely actions). “I’m pretty convinced that you would be hard-pressed to assemble a group of people as multitalented,” Bloom boasts. “They’re all going to blow your minds.”
