Some programs of note for you animal lovers:

Animal Witness Animal Planet, Wednesdays beginning Sept. 3 at 9pm ET/PT. What if animals could testify to a crime? Thanks to dogged detective work and modern forensic science, they can. This new half-hour documentary series showcases amazing stories of animals helping investigators and forensic scientists solve high-stakes criminal cases. Each case unfolds through the unique perspective of the animal involved, whether it’s a cat, dog, bird, deer, or tiger. Keen-eyed detectives and scientists on the cutting edge of veterinary forensics will provide a voice for these powerful-but all too often silent-witnesses. The animals are ready to talk. Are we ready to listen? [Read more →]

This month’s programming that may be of interest to you animal lovers:

Rolex Grand Prix of Show Jumping Animal Planet, Aug. 2. This prestigious event is the last chance for U.S. athletes and horses to make the U.S. Olympic Show Jumping team, which will be announced at the conclusion. A crowd of 35,000 spectators, as well as many top international riders, adds to the tension.

Puppy Games 2008Animal Planet, Aug. 8. We’ve seen them run and tackle in the popular Puppy Bowl, and now more cuddly canines are taking part in different athletic endeavors in the first Puppy Games. The competition settings include various arenas such as swimming pools and boxing rings, but, if you know puppies at all, it seems inevitable that each event will simply end up in some form of running, wrestling and/or tug-of-war. They are only amateurs, after all. [Read more →]

Comic-Con ‘08: No Rest For Batman

Posted by SH

Having the fastest movie ever to top $300 million isn’t enough for the Caped Crusader. He’ll be hitting both the small screen and the bookshelf this fall with incarnations far different than the blacker-than-black version currently in theaters. “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” comes to Cartoon Network on Nov. 14, and it will wear its love of nostalgia proudly on its brightly colored sleeve. Taking its name from a comic book that pairs Batman with a different superhero each issue, and almost always took him out of Gotham City, the series will bring to life many second-tier DC Comics heroes that rarely if ever have lived beyond the page. Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, Plastic Man — those are just the ones we saw in the clip, which was set to some sweet up-tempo jazz music that will serve as the theme song. Diedrich Bader (many know him from “The Drew Carey Show” — I prefer to think of him as the “two chicks at the same time” guy from “Office Space”) will voice Batman, and some other guest voices include R. Lee Ermey, Tom Kenny and Will Friedle. It’s not made for kids, necessarily, but it’s definitely one kids can watch. The most memorable moment of the Comic-Con session came from a little guy, in fact, who stepped up to the mic and asked what the Batmobile will be able to do in this show. When told it will be able to do anything, he replied with a sincere “Sweet!” that brought the house down and reminded us all why we love this stuff in the first place. Don’t miss it, folks.

I said something about a book, right? Well, back in the 1960s, Batman was catching on all over the world during the height of the kitschy-even-then Adam West TV series. Japan, for instance, adapted the characters for its own line of comics, and was the only country outside the U.S. to officially get authorization from DC Comics to do so. Seeing Batman through different, super happy-fun eyes is a kick, and 400 pages of it are collected in Chip Kidd’s “Bat-Manga: The Secret History of Batman in Japan,” due to hit bookstores in October. In addition to the actual Batman manga stories, there is tons of merchandise that hasn’t seen the light of day in over 40 years, and stuff that the head of DC said he had never even seen. Kidd said he’s already collected enough for a sequel, and he whispered in my ear that a similar project is underway with another DC stalwart — some guy who wears a blue suit and a red cape.

Wild, Wild World of Animals (July 2008)

greatest american dogPosted by RabbitEars

This month’s premieres and new episodes that may be of interest to you animal lovers:

Greatest American Dog CBS, July 10. This new reality competition series pits 12 teams of dogs and owners from across the country against each other in challenges that test the dogs, and perhaps the people even more, as they must prove their ability to have their pet effectively trained. Like many other reality shows, these teams will also be living together. If you think things got pretty chaotic in The Real World households, try putting 12 pooches in the same living area. And like The Real World, the dogs all have their differences and unique personalities — some are “pageant dogs,” while others are home-trained. From there, you know the standard reality drill: Each week, one dog and owner will be eliminated (from competition, not literally), until the last remaining team gets to roll around in a $250,000 cash prize. Popular TV animal expert Jarod Miller hosts the proceedings, with dog pros Wendy Diamond, Allan Reznik and Victoria Stilwell (It’s Me or the Dog) serving as judges.

You probably already know that the Jonas Brothers movie Camp Rock premieres on Disney Channel this Friday. What you might not know, is that Demi Lovato, the Jonases’ costar in the movie — and the official “Next Big Thing” among the teen set — has signed on to star in her very own series on the network called Welcome to Mollywood. Production begins this September, with a 2008-09 season premiere expected. So there’s that.

Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it a thousand times already, here’s a Camp Rock preview clip:

Hey, animal lovers, here are some new shows, and notable new episodes, that you might enjoy this month:

meerkatsMeerkat Manor: The Next Generation (Season 4) Animal Planet, Fridays beginning June 6. The popular docu-reality series returns to show us that even animal families can be dysfunctional. Since the tragic death of the Manor’s reigning monarch, Flower, the meerkats of the Kalahari Desert are in chaos. Under their new matriarch, Rocket Dog, the Whiskers family still battle their arch enemies the Commandos, and now their own sister Maybelline and her mob of rebellious subjects — the Aztecs. Talk about sibling rivalry.

Animal Cops: South Africa Animal Planet, Fridays, June 6-27. The award-winning producers of Animal Cops and Animal Precinct now follow the Animal Cruelty Inspectors at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dog Whisperer: “Peanut and Sunshine, Roxy and Angus” — National Geographic Channel, June 6. In this new episode, Cesar Millan tries to quiet down a chaotic Chihuahua causing stress in a home consisting of six people, two dogs and two cats.

Orangutans: The New Meerkats?

After the sad and shocking death of poor Flower on Meerkat Manor last week, I just can’t take the heartache any more! I need to find a new “animal soap,” and I just may have it with Orangutan Island, premiering November 2 on Animal Planet and airing Fridays (filling in the void left when MM goes on hiatus; the season finale of MM serves as a lead-in to the new series on the 2nd).
