Jericho Nuke Notes: Patriots And Tyrants

Posted by Ryan

Jericho FinaleJericho, Season 2, Episode 7, “Patriots and Tyrants”: Jake and Hawkins have one final opportunity to prove to the independent Texas government that they hold the evidence to one of the biggest conspiracies in history … but first they’ll have to get past the Cheyenne government.

What we kind of suspected was officially announced this week by CBS:

The March 25th episode of Jericho will be the series finale. Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more. We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We’re proud of everyone’s efforts.

There will be a small faction of Jericho diehards who will throw a fit and mail more bags of nuts to CBS. But this cancellation was warranted, expected and, quite frankly, an act of mercy. There’s really nowhere left for this story to go. The only thing we really needed to know from Season 1 was who was behind the attacks and why. Season 2 gave us the answer, along with a bunch of random chases, standoffs and gunfights. Unless you’re really engrossed with Stanley and Mimi’s wedding registry, you should be happy to have this series wrapped up.

Jericho Nuke Notes: Sedition

Jericho SeditionJericho, Season 2, Episode 6, “Sedition”: Following the Rangers’ decision to take justice into their own hands, Major Beck goes to extreme measures to prove he’s in complete control of the town, while Hawkins receives a call from Chavez telling him that it’s time to transport the bomb.

The Rangers are in hiding and Major Beck is on the warpath after the killing of Goetz. Jake surrenders, taking the fall for Stanley. Jake offers himself up in exchange for amnesty for the other Rangers, but Beck will have none of it. Jake is hooded and taken off to get the Gitmo treatment.

Chavez calls Hawkins from Texas and tells him that it’s time to get the bomb down to San Antonio to convince the state not to join up with Cheyenne. Hawkins has a fake J&R I.D., a stolen J&R shirt and a stolen J&R truck — he’ll need them to get a free pass through the checkpoints. John Smith calls Hawkins and tells him to take the bomb to a nearby safe location instead, but Hawkins refuses. This doesn’t sit well with Smith, who calls Beck and tells him who Hawkins really is and what he really has in his trunk.

Jericho Nuke Notes: Termination For Cause

Jericho TerminationJericho, Season 2, Episode 5, “Termination for Cause”: Jake and the Rangers square off in a battle for survival against Goetz and Ravenwood, while one of the Rangers takes a course of action that will alter his life forever.

We’re down to the last three episodes of the season — probably of the series — so we should be getting all sorts of revelations and resolution, right? Wrong. At least they’re killing off characters.

Stanley’s sister Bonnie is dead, killed by Goetz and Ravenwood. Mimi is shot but still alive, and is transported to the hospital. Goetz wasn’t aware that Mimi was in the house — she’s a witness who knows what happened in the house and why Ravenwood was coming there in the first place. So Goetz has to get to the hospital to finish off Mimi. But Jake and his guys are armed and protecting the hospital — and we have yet another standoff.

Jericho Nuke Notes: Oversight

Posted by Ryan

Jericho OversightJericho, Season 2, Episode 4 “Oversight”: Hawkins receives another call from his mysterious new contact, John Smith, who continues to know his every move, and who informs Hawkins that he is one day away from being caught by Major Beck. Mimi discovers someone inside of Jennings & Rall is embezzling money.

J&R is forcing all businesses to register with them, to “protect” them against illegal activity. Cheyenne has put a price freeze on retail goods, but J&R is charging businesses exorbitant prices — gouging, essentially — for supplies. This J&R monopoly has resulted in a black market economy which Dale seems to be pretty good at. Dale can smuggle cheap stuff into Jericho through Stanley’s farm, bypassing the military checkpoints. But with Stanley’s fiancee and sister now in league with J&R, and the fact that the debt on his farm has been erased, Stanley sympathizes with J&R and won’t allow Dale to use his farm for smuggling. The soldiers manning the checkpoints can be easily convinced to look the other way so long as there’s booze in it for them. But before they can get the plan into action, someone rats out Dale to Ravenwood. Dale is arrested and is immediately escorted to a high-security prison. But Jake intercepts the military transport and convinces Major Beck to release Dale.

Jericho Nuke Notes: Jennings & Rall

Jericho Jennings & Rall

Jericho, Season 2, Episode 3 “Jennings & Rall”: When Jake discovers that the government official who is supposed to protect them is actually withholding a vaccine for the Hudson River virus, he and the Rangers take their survival into their own hands.

We learn that Ravenwood is a subsidiary of Jennings & Rall. It’s like their own private army. Jake was once an employee of Jennings & Rall, back when he was driving supply trucks in Iraq. Jake’s convoy came under attack, and they returned fire and some civilians were killed. But there was no investigation or repercussions. J&R kept the whole episode quiet.

Though the government denies it, Hudson River virus has crossed the Mississippi River. Fall River, Missouri, is under quarantine and 220 people have died there in the past week. Dale was able to acquire a few thousand doses of the vaccine through the black market, but Ravenwood has orders to confiscate and destroy all vaccines that don’t come directly from J&R (hey, they’re just concerned about public safety). Seems like depriving people or whole towns of life-saving vaccinations is a good way to get people to cooperate … or just get rid of them altogether. So if there’s no danger of the virus west of the Mississippi River, then why has everyone in J&R already been inoculated?

Jericho Nuke Notes: Condor

Jericho Condor Jericho, Season 2, Episode 2: “Condor” Jake helps Major Beck prepare for a special visitor from the Cheyenne government, while Hawkins continues to work with Chavez to uncover the secrets of this new regime.

Mimi gets to be an accountant for Jennings & Rall. She’s really excited. She loves bar codes! And we’re pretty sure Jennings & Rall is pure evil. Alas, poor Mimi doesn’t have anyone to invite to her wedding, since all of her family is pretty much dead.

Condor is the code name for the president, John Tomarchio, the biggest bird in the West. He’s an over-the-top phony when he gives speeches — he should campaign with Hillary!

Jennings & Rall sent a shipment of new textbooks for the school in Jericho. A New America: A Comprehensive History will give a new point of view to American history. Chapters include: The Decline and Fall of the First Republic 1945-Present, The Failure of the Cuban Missile Crisis: The Lack of Action against the Soviet Union, and Vietnam: The Premature Withdrawal of Troops in 1975. It’s almost as if the Montana Militia were now running the Department of Education.

Jericho Nuke Notes: Reconstruction

Jericho Reconstruction

You asked for it. Jericho is back from the dead. Honestly, I was a little relieved when I heard the show had been canceled. I watched Jericho from the beginning, but like many CBS shows, I felt like I was the only one watching it and pretty much wasting my time. The story often moved painfully slow, and the only character that held my interest was Hawkins. I couldn’t even remember most of the characters’ names — I just called them Skeet, Skeet’s Brother, Skeet’s Farmer Friend, IRS Chick, Major Dad, etc. In an hourlong episode, they managed to have only two or three really captivating minutes in which some new info about the nuclear attack was revealed. But those two or three minutes were enough to keep me coming back week after week, and enough to bring me back for what will likely be the series’ final stint.

The Jericho Nuke Notes aren’t going to be detailed episode recaps. We’re going to post some highlights, big reveals, new questions and other observations from each episode.

Jericho, Season 2, Episode 1 “Reconstruction”

It’s now six months after the nukes, and four weeks after the war with New Bern. The new federal government is centralized in Cheyenne, Wyoming. John Tomarchio is the new president. The new flag has vertical stripes and 21 stars. The government’s set up a camp in Jericho to help bring some much-needed bureaucracy back to this hick town.
