Comic-Con ‘08: TV on the “Fringe”

Posted by SH

J.J. Abrams brought a sneak peek of his new offering, “Fringe,” which bows on FOX Sept. 9. The first scene is a plane in distress, but no worries, there is no deserted island on the horizons. Smoke monsters, maybe, but none was visible in the pilot. The plane manages to land, but not until everyone on board is turned into goo so that all that’s left is skeletons. It’s a harrowing sequence, assuring that the effects will be feature-film quality. Newcomer Anna Torv is among the FBI agents called to investigate, and things quickly become personal when her partner both in and out of uniform is infected with the same mysterious ailment that killed the passengers. To save him, she needs to dig up an old fossil of a scientist who’s been holed up in the loony bin for almost two decades. The only way to get access to him is through his son, a troubled genius in his own right played by Joshua Jackson. Abrams has admitted he’s going for an “Altered States” vibe here, and that’s driven home further by the presence of Blair Brown, who starred in the trippy 1980 shocker and shows up here as a corporate exec whose motives are not yet clear. There’s definitely a larger conspiracy afoot, but Abrams promises not to lay it on so thick that a casual viewer will be, ahem, lost.

Getting Lost: There’s No Place Like Home, Parts 2 and 3 Review

If we had told you before last night’s Season 4 finale aired that Jeremy Bentham was dead, would you have cared? Probably not, unless you were a philosophy major in college. Now, John Locke would have been another question entirely. As it turns out, they’re the same guy — and they’re both dead. Or are they? As Lost fans, we’ve been conditioned to question just about everything we see. As such, we’ve been trying to think of reasons Locke might still be alive. Here’s what we’ve come up with:

Getting Lost: The Top 10 Things We Love About This Season

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

Here they are, in no particular order, the 10 things we have enjoyed most about the current season of Lost — one which we feel will go down as not only the best in the series’ history, but one of the best in television history, as well. Yeah, it’s been that good.

1. The new characters. While in the past we’ve been subjected to pointless additions to the cast (Nikki and Paulo, we’re looking in your direction), this season’s newcomers have played vital roles in the overall story arc and have quickly become integral to our enjoyment of the series. Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Matthew Abaddon and Martin Keamy, in particular, have quickly become favorites of ours.

2.
Desmond and Penny’s phone call during “The Constant.” We’re not much for mushy stuff, but this was one powerful scene. We just hope Desmond makes it off the freighter and that this wasn’t the last conversation he and Penny will ever have.

Getting Lost: “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1″ Review

Those of you who want answers might have been a little disappointed by last night’s episode of Lost. Sure, we found out that Jack now knows about Claire being his sister. And we know that the Oceanic 6 is trying to pass off Aaron as Kate’s son. But we were only able to officially cross off one item from our list of unanswered questions. Still, that’s OK, because this is just the first of a three-part finale (with the final two parts airing over two hours on May 29, in case you’ve forgotten). Think of it as Back to the Future II. We knew going in that we weren’t going to get a neat little ending for Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Instead we were left with a preview of Back to the Future III — which, unfortunately, sucked really hard. Hopefully “There’s No Place Like Home, Parts 2 and 3″ will be much more satisfying. We’re pretty sure that they will be. Now, on with the recap.

johnnsweeptheleg’s Lost In A Moment:

I’d like to welcome you all to an event that’s sometimes been called the island counterpart to the Bay of Pigs. The wild, cross-island competition where eccentric groups all try to beat one another to reach The Orchid! All we were missing was Burt Reynolds (with ’stache), and this could’ve been a Cannonball Run sequel.

Getting Lost: “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1″ Preview

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

This week’s episode of Lost, “There’s No Place Like Home, Part 1,” is the first installment of the season’s three-part finale, which — in one of the most complicated finale schedules we can remember — airs two weeks before the two-hour presentation of Parts 2 and 3 on May 29. That’s right. Lost is going on yet another mini-hiatus, thanks to a two-hour Grey’s Anatomy season finale on May 22.

That aside, we wanted to discuss something from last week’s episode. During “Cabin Fever,” Ben suggested that he wasn’t always the “leader” of the island. So who was? How nice of you to ask. We have our own crazy little theory: It seems Richard Alpert might have been Ben’s predecessor before he took on a new role, in which he was subservient to Ben — much like Ben has now done with Locke. Looking to the future, it seems like Walt and Aaron might become the future Ben and Locke. It seems that Ben, in his own way (cough*kidnapping*cough), wanted to recruit the two of them, much like Alpert did with Ben and Locke. Maybe hearing this from Christian Shephard was why Claire was willing to leave Aaron behind — “where he needs to be” — while she hangs out with her dead dad in Jacob’s cabin. Just putting it out there.

Anyway, here are the preview clips:

Getting Lost: “Cabin Fever” Review

What did we learn from last night’s episode of Lost? Well, for one thing, this cat Keamy is a bad mother — sorry, I was talkin’ about Shaft. But Keamy is not one to be trifled with. Or to be in close proximity to. Just ask the doctor. We also saw Ben reduced to sharing a candy bar with Hurley on the sidelines while Locke sought answers from Jacob. It sucks not to be the Island’s chosen one anymore, doesn’t it, Ben? And we also learned that Richard Alpert is a man with a plan — a long-term plan, since he was recruiting Locke 50 years before he was ever wheeled onto Oceanic 815. As for the rest, here’s johnnysweeptheleg …

johnnysweeptheleg’s Lost In A Moment:

I have no doubt that had John Locke been one of the Oceanic 6, there would’ve been an E! True Hollywood Story about his life. His teenage mom was a 1950s-era Jamie-Lynn Spears and gave birth to a premature John after being run over by a car. The father? An older man more than twice her age. All you need is some White Lightnin’ and you’ve got the makings of a classic country song, here. [Read more →]

Getting Lost: “Cabin Fever” Preview

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

As usual, Lost has been pretty confusing lately. For every answer we get, a whole batch of new questions arise. But one thing we’re sure about, is that the last few episodes of this season are going to be awesome — beginning with this week’s “Cabin Fever,” which takes us back to the freighter to see what’s up with Desmond, Sayid and Michael. Any episode with Desmond in it is sure to be a good one, but we really get the feeling that there are some major doin’s a-transpiring. For a hint as to what those might be, check out the two preview clips below, the first of which comes from Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (And, by the way, as much as we like Terrence Howard, we think Cuse and Lindelof are probably pretty happy with their decision to cast Harold Perrineau as Michael. We certainly are. Also, we miss Mr. Eko. That is all.)

Getting Lost: “Something Nice Back Home” Review

One week Bernard knows Morse code. The next Charlotte speaks Korean. Is it too much to ask that next week someone uncovers a secret in Pig Latin? This episode seemed to deal with some pretty big issues that will likely be at the forefront during the last few episodes of the season. Some new characters, and some previously minor characters, seem poised to play a pretty big role in the overall story arc, which is a sign that this has been a good season, particularly for an abbreviated one. Just think, if Miles had been around from the beginning of the series, we might know a lot more about what is going on. He solved the Rousseau/Karl murder mystery faster than Scooby-Doo and the gang ever could — and without yanking off a single rubber mask. But we digress …

johnnysweeptheleg’s Lost In A Moment:

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed last night’s episode. But, OMG, it was totally written by a high-school girl!

Getting Lost: “Something Nice Back Home” Preview

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

ABC has been running previews for this week’s episode that contain the line, “The island takes one survivor for its own.” Does that mean that another character will be meeting an untimely end, a week after we said goodbye to Alex (not to mention three random members of Locke’s camp who were too stupid to listen to Sawyer — and the sound of gunfire — and stay inside their house)? Maybe, although it’s a pretty open-ended statement. Still, after watching the previews below, we’d be a little worried if we were Claire, Sawyer or Miles.
