Animal Planet’s Monster Week 2014 to include a Shannen Doherty horror film

Animal Planet's Monster Week 2014 to include a Shannen Doherty horror film

Animal Planet has gotten some flak in recent years for its “mockumentaries” about mermaids, which have been presented in a realistic format, albeit with quick disclaimers at the end indicating that they were more speculative than anything. For the network’s Monster Week 2014, Animal Planet can’t really be criticized in that regard for its new production Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys, which an Animal Planet release plainly indicates is a “horror film” (but they also do call it a “marquee two-hour special”). To further let you know that this program should not be taken as scientific fact, it … Continue reading

River Monsters Season 6 finds Jeremy Wade back in the Amazon

River Monsters Season 6 finds Jeremy Wade back in the Amazon

Animal Planet announced that River Monsters — the network’s best-performing series for five years — will return with a new season. River Monsters Season 6 begins April 6 at 9pm ET/PT. Whereas past seasons of River Monsters found host Jeremy Wade criss-crossing the globe in search of monstrous fish, in Season 6 the biologist/extreme angler will spend the entire season in South America — specifically, exploring the Amazon. “I’ve been fishing the world for decades, but it’s the Amazon that keeps calling me back,” Wade said, in a release. “Now, I’m returning to solve the mission of a lifetime to … Continue reading

Ranking the 2014 Puppy Bowl, Kitten Bowl and Fish Bowl

Ranking the 2014 Puppy Bowl, Kitten Bowl and Fish Bowl

Before, during and after Super Bowl XLVIII there were a number of other viewing options to occupy your time if you so chose (which may have come in handy for many, given how the Big Game almost immediately turned into a blowout). Animal lovers, in particular, had more options than usual this year to get their “bowl” fix on. There was, of course, the tried-and-true Puppy Bowl, which has adorably dominated the space for 10 installments now. But newcomers Kitten Bowl and Fish Bowl also appeared on the scene this past Super Bowl Sunday, staking claims for not only the … Continue reading

First Lady Michelle Obama hosts Puppy Bowl “training camp”

First Lady Michelle Obama hosts Puppy Bowl "training camp"

Ahead of Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl X this Sunday, hype for the annual special was amped up recently when First Lady Michelle Obama and the First Family’s dogs Bo and Sunny worked to “train” some of the pups for the big game. Joined by 12 first- and second-grade students from Harriet Tubman Elementary School, Michelle Obama, Bo and Sunny put the puppies through their paces to make sure they were ready to compete in Puppy Bowl X, and to be healthy for life. Animal Planet says it was inspired by the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to overcome childhood obesity, … Continue reading

Puppy Bowl 2014 celebrates event's 10th anniversary

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl 2014 is the 10th anniversary edition of the hugely popular (12.4 million viewers last year) Super Bowl Sunday counter-programming event. Puppy Bowl helped popularize the trend of networks airing special programming “bowls,” and Puppy Bowl X will now also have cute competition from Hallmark Channel’s first Kitten Bowl, airing on the same day (Feb. 2). How does Animal Planet look to stay leader of the pack with Puppy Bowl X? Aside from the usual cuddly canine competitors and the Kitty Halftime Show, Puppy Bowl 2014 will have new additions, including penguin cheerleaders and even the first … Continue reading

Animal Planet series invites you to “Meet the Sloths”

Animal Planet series invites you to "Meet the Sloths"

Sloths — especially baby sloths — have been burning up the internet in recent years in terms of having their cuteness spread virally via pictures and videos. I have no way of measuring, of course, but they may even be close to rivaling cats in the number of adorable and funny pics populating the web, and in number of hits their images get. I know I’ve passed along my share of photos, trying to convince friends of the awesomeness of baby sloths, and last year, thanks to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, we found out that sloths even have the power … Continue reading

Animal Planet special remembers “Hero Dogs of 9/11″

Animal Planet special remembers "Hero Dogs of 9/11"

Sept. 11, 2013, marks the 12th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attacks on America. When we recall the tragedy of that day, we also remember the many heroes who sprung into action during the events, and in the aftermath. And not all of the heroes were human, as the new Animal Planet special Hero Dogs of 9/11 shows. Premiering Sept. 10 at 8pm ET/PT, Hero Dogs of 9/11 details the stories of three World Trade Center survivors, and the working dogs that saved lives at Ground Zero. More than 300 dogs were used in the rescue and recovery operation following the attack. One of … Continue reading

Animal Planet re-airing “Mermaids” specials

Animal Planet re-airing "Mermaids" specials

Sure, Discovery Communications has likely heard the complaints from some regarding its recent trend toward programming specials that on the outside look like scientific documentaries about incredible discoveries — Mermaids! Megalodons! — but, on closer examination (and following a few seconds of rapid, hard-to-read disclaimers flashed at the end) turn out to be more fanciful “What if?” scenarios than true science. They can take those complaints under advisement and promptly ignore them, since the ratings for these shows are huge, and they will likely continue to make more of them, in addition to re-airing the ones they already created. Animal … Continue reading

“Treehouse Masters” helps Animal Planet’s Friday night ratings climb

"Treehouse Masters" helps Animal Planet's Friday night ratings climb

After three episodes, Animal Planet’s new series Treehouse Masters has become a Friday night hit for the network, even though it would appear to have little to do with animals. Treehouse Masters follows Pete Nelson as he designs private escapes for people who wish to reconnect with nature and perhaps awaken their inner child through treehouses they only could have dreamed of in their youth — some even including functional plumbing and electricity. Nelson has a team of designers and carpenters helping him out, including his son Charlie. Additionally, Pete and his wife, Judy, and daughter, Emily, own and operate … Continue reading
