"Treetop Cat Rescue": Animal Planet series follows duo who save treed felines

If you live in Washington state, home of some of the largest trees in the country, and your cat ends up in one of those trees, who do you call? If the trees are too tall for your local fire department to help with, and if Superman isn’t around, how can poor kitty ever get back down to the ground? Turns out that expert tree climbers and cat communication experts Shaun Sears and Tom Otto are on the case, and a new Animal Planet series, Treetop Cat Rescue, chronicles their adventures in trying to rescue frenzied felines from the canopy. More from Animal Planet: … Continue reading

Monster Week 2015 airs nine nights on Animal Planet

Monster Week 2015 airs nine nights on Animal Planet

Recently, Animal Planet announced the lineup for its annual Monster Week celebration of all things related to terrifying beasts, real and legendary. Monster Week 2015 will air nine nights, May 17 through May 25, on the network, and some of the premiere titles are eye-catching, to say the least, sounding more like Syfy movies, with program names including Serial Killer Tiger at Large and Killer Hornets From Hell. Earlier this year, new Discovery Channel president Rich Ross promised no more “mockumentaries” on the channel, like has been seen with the Mermaids and Megalodon shows. That promise may have technically applied only to Discovery Channel … Continue reading

Animal Planet’s “The Whale” explores real-life event that inspired “Moby-Dick”

Animal Planet's "The Whale" explores real-life event that inspired "Moby-Dick"

“From the network that brought you Mermaids,” read the title card ahead of the trailer for Animal Planet’s self-described “scripted event” The Whale: Revenge From the Deep. That may be enough to either intrigue or dissuade any number of people who either liked or disliked Animal Planet’s previous forays into scripted fare like Mermaids, but the trailer does look promising. Add to that the fact that Martin Sheen headlines the film based on a gripping true-life tale, and that’s enough to get us to dive in. The two-hour production is a retelling of the sinking of the Nantucket whaling ship … Continue reading

Squatchers of “Finding Bigfoot” will also look for Nessie this season

Squatchers of "Finding Bigfoot" will also look for Nessie this season

Although they haven’t, to my knowledge, found much convincing evidence of Sasquatch, the self-described “Squatchers” of Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot will continue the hunt when a new season of the series begins Nov. 9 at 9pm ET/PT. At the start of the season’s eight new episodes, the team is supposedly “hot on the trail of what they believe to be the world’s largest Sasquatch.” That enormous Bigfoot is the subject of the two-hour season premiere, which takes Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) president Matt Moneymaker, researchers James “Bobo” Fay and Cliff Barackman, and skeptical scientist Ranae Holland, off to Alaska. … Continue reading

Redwood Kings On Animal Planet

Redwood Kings

John Daniels is a magician with a chainsaw. And his twin brother Ron is a wizard with numbers. Together, they and their crew of 40 artists, carpenters, designers and engineers create spectacular play structures, animated characters, shooting galleries and animal carvings for entertainment centers, theme parks, casinos and families around the country. Welcome to the world of Redwood Kings. John took his artistic talents and started carving redwood animals over 23 years ago. “We kept finding logs, oak trees and redwood trees, different species that were hollow in the middle or fallen down,” he said. “There’s a lot of logs … Continue reading

“911 cat” featured on this week’s “My Cat From Hell”

"911 cat" featured on this week's "My Cat From Hell"

The June 14 episode of Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell will find host/cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy visiting Lux, the infamous “911 cat” with a “history of violence” who earlier this year made headlines by terrorizing his guardians so much that he forced them to call the emergency number. On the 911 call, the terrified family reported that they were shut off in a bedroom, with their infant and dog, as the crazed cat screeched in the background. “He’s trying to attack us,” the man who called the number told the dispatcher. Apparently, the cat would charge at them every … Continue reading

Animal Planet’s Monster Week 2014 to include a Shannen Doherty horror film

Animal Planet's Monster Week 2014 to include a Shannen Doherty horror film

Animal Planet has gotten some flak in recent years for its “mockumentaries” about mermaids, which have been presented in a realistic format, albeit with quick disclaimers at the end indicating that they were more speculative than anything. For the network’s Monster Week 2014, Animal Planet can’t really be criticized in that regard for its new production Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys, which an Animal Planet release plainly indicates is a “horror film” (but they also do call it a “marquee two-hour special”). To further let you know that this program should not be taken as scientific fact, it … Continue reading

River Monsters Season 6 finds Jeremy Wade back in the Amazon

River Monsters Season 6 finds Jeremy Wade back in the Amazon

Animal Planet announced that River Monsters — the network’s best-performing series for five years — will return with a new season. River Monsters Season 6 begins April 6 at 9pm ET/PT. Whereas past seasons of River Monsters found host Jeremy Wade criss-crossing the globe in search of monstrous fish, in Season 6 the biologist/extreme angler will spend the entire season in South America — specifically, exploring the Amazon. “I’ve been fishing the world for decades, but it’s the Amazon that keeps calling me back,” Wade said, in a release. “Now, I’m returning to solve the mission of a lifetime to … Continue reading
