Back in model mode: New season of “America’s Next Top Model” premiere!

By Emily Mitchell

If you haven’t caught yourself spending a whole day on the couch watching America’s Next Top Model marathons on MTV, then you need to check yourself. With 12 cycles already done, the show has so much variety and creativity throughout each season that catching a random episode can fill your gloomy Saturday with sunshine and rainbows of ferocity.

And I will also admit that after watching, I find myself standing too long in front of the mirror in the bathroom trying to capture emotion with my eyes and lengthen my neck. But being 5-foot-3 (I’ll give myself the half inch), I’ve never had to worry about taking my poses and faces to the runway … until now!

The new season of ANTM is all about the short people. As in, all the models are 5-foot-7 or below. Tyra Banks is back with the 13th cycle of ANTM, and this season’s short theme is relatable and realistic for a chunk of its audience.

Fourteen women will once again be chosen to live in a house together in Los Angeles and compete to become America’s Next Top Model and win a bevy of prizes, including a modeling contract with Wilhemina Models, a cover on Seventeen magazine and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl Cosmetics. Here is a run-through of all the models, who look to be the youngest class ANTM has ever had: [Read more →]

Top Model Audition Adventures

by Dizzy Miss Lizzy

Well, you all did it. I can scarcely believe it, but you rose to the comment challenge. You kept up your end of the bargain, so I must keep mine. Tomorrow, I’ll be in Chicago for ANTM’s Cycle 13 open casting call.

While I wish I could blog live from the line, I don’t think a laptop will go with my outfit. But I will post regular Twitter updates @ChannelGuideAV. And you can check back right here Wednesday night for the full recap.

Pre-Audition Jitters:

I’m debating whether I should showcase my fashion ineptitudes in a mocking way or take the whole thing a little more seriously and try to look nice. Though, looking through my closet, there is a not-so-subtle absence of anything fashion forward. Jeans and a t-shirt, anyone?

Then there’s face and hair. Eek! I own chapstick, not lip gloss. Plus, last week I gave myself a pretty rough haircut; somehow I don’t think Miss Jay would give me fierceness points for this uneven mid-length chop. Well, I guess it’s you and me again, ponytail, old friend. And heck, there are still about 5 hours left to learn how to apply makeup! I’m in good shape. Wish me luck.

ANTM Recap: Do You Light the Way I Look?

by Dizzy Miss Lizzy

Ooh the divisions are starting. Aminat called out Sandra for being such a bitch, saying that the “better person went home” last week. It’s on. Sandra really needs an attitude adjustment. Her walk does not match the talk, that’s for sure. But I hope the girl fight doesn’t drag Aminat down. She needs to save her energy for the competition. Sandra will fail all on her own.

Tyra assigns Mr. Jay and Miss J a mission - transform these 12 “wanna-bes” into high fashion, fierce, femme fatalian models. Yeah, Tyra tried to make up a word. I love the makeover episodes. The girls who are terrified of a haircut crack me up. This season, the looks are Top Secret. As in, the girls will not know anything about the look they are getting until it’s complete.

ANTM Season 12 Premiere, Part One

by Dizzy Miss Lizzy

America’s Next Top Model, Season 12 Premiere. We start in Las Vegas. Out of thousands of ANTM applicants, Tyra has chosen 34 potential models. There are 34 girls now, but by the end of this show, there will only be 12. In the end, there can only be one. (Cullen McCloud of the Clan McCloud. Wait, sorry, wrong show!)

The Jays introduce the girls to Caesar’s Palace and send them to the first challenge. The girls change out of their “street-walking” clothes and into white mini-tunics, keeping with the Roman Goddess theme. Then they go to their first photo shoot with Jay Manuel and take profile shots. Some girls are lovely and some are hideous. But can they take a good picture?

The second challenge comes immediately after the first. Miss J takes a look at their runway walks. There’s a lot of arm waving and shoulder shaking. These girls need a lot of work.

Enter the goddess of fierce, Tyra Banks. It’s a silly spectacle, but when in Vegas, do as the Vegans do? We don’t get a lot of face time with most of the girls.

In front of the judges:

Sandra - The girl from Kenya. She is tall, thin, dark and beautiful. She knows it. She thinks she is an African goddess. Miss J is jealous because it’s true.

“ANTM” Casting Call Reaches For New Heights

By RabbitEars

After 12 cycles of seeking supermodel wannabes with a minimum height requirement of 5′7″ — the industry standard — Tyra Banks and America’s Next Top Model are setting their sights lower for Cycle 13. The series, which begins open casting calls for its next installment this Saturday, is now looking only for women who are 5′7″ or under.

“There have been top supermodels in the past that weren’t as tall as the industry demands,” says Banks, “like fashion icon Kate Moss. So we are changing up Top Model for Cycle 13 and making it a year for the shorter model.”

It isn’t quite a year for the older model, however — the age requirement is still 18-27. The show will continue looking for women of diverse backgrounds, shapes and sizes.

Who Will Be America’s Next Top Model?

by Ruth Anne Boulet

So, based on cycle’s past, the first girl shown doing an ‘up-close-and-personal’ headshot first is the winner. That would mean that Samantha is winning this cycle. I think it’s a decoy this year.

The challenge for this episode is the same — it’s a commercial shoot for Cover Girl. Mr. Jay brings out Whitney to help explain the challenge and the Cover Girl product. It freshens your breath and makes you beautiful!

This time, the girls have to have their lines memorized, and they have to kiss a boy. Sam is worried about the boy having herpes. Um, Sam, you can’t get herpes from kissing a boy. McKey looks like a bobblehead and Analeigh completely loses the lines. Having a wobbly-bobbly head is fixable. Not being able to memorize lines isn’t as easy to recover from. Mr. Jay ends up feeding her the lines & she does well. [Read more →]

It’s Time To Boot Marjorie Off ANTM

by Ruth Anne Boulet

Oh, don’t get on me about spoiling things. I don’t know who’s going to actually get booted off, but boy is it ever time to give Eeyore the heave-ho. Or maybe I just don’t understand. She is European. She begins this episode by saying that she needs to calm down. Uh, yeah.

Tyra’s whipping out the melodramatic music as Marjorie gets counseled by Analeigh. Even she seems over it. She’s paying more attention to the clothes she’s folding.

It’s time for another Paulina lesson! How do you sell something that you don’t want to sell? First up, a bucket of herring, then toilet paper. At least ANTM is giving the girls tips they can use, since most of them will be doing commercial work. Each girl had a strength, even Marjorie. How positive! [Read more →]

ANTM Brings Some Go-See Meltdown Fun

by Ruth Anne Boulet

I’d just like to note that I, unlike every other ANTM blogger I saw, did not feel the need to reference The Police hit Roxanne. It just seemed too obvious. Red light.

Top 5! OMG! Top 5! It’s so great! TyraMail lets the girls know that it’s go-see time. Awesome. Time to see some lost weepy models. Each girl gets their own boat to get to 5 designers before the 5pm deadline. Based on the graphic, it looks like the girls get 4 hours total time. The girls complain about the speed of the boats. They’re slow. Harumph. [Read more →]

ANTM Heads to Amsterdam

by Ruth Anne Boulet

The girls hit Amsterdam, and of course the challenges begin. The host of Holland’s Top Model tells the girls that they have to find their own way to the model house. They have to work in teams, and Sam and Elina end up as a team, and end up winning 50 extra frames.

Sheena is surprised that Amsterdam isn’t all dirty sex and pot, but actually a nice town. Then Marjorie, Elina and Analeigh decide to have a bath & shave their privates together. Welcome to Amsterdam.

And we get to see more of Amsterdam — the red light district. Miss Jay is there to talk about Red Light Fashion Amsterdam where fashion houses take over brothels for a design show. The girls have to work in pairs with a particular designer to bring that designer’s vision to life.

So we get posing in windows, with Miss Jay and the designers ‘critiquing’ them outside. Marjorie gets high props, and Sheena is damned by being too pretty. Really did Sheena have a chance with this challenge? Sheena the too sexy? Can she possibly NOT be sexy in a brothel window? Isn’t that asking the impossible? The winner gets to walk in several European fashion shows. Miss Jay was right, it’s a great prize. [Read more →]
