Kids, here’s how “How I Met Your Mother” ended

So there you have it, kids. Nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother all came down to “Last Forever,” encapsulating into one tidy hour everything that happens to Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall, Lily and The Mother from 2013-2030. ALSO SEE: 6 big questions for the How I Met Your Mother series finale There were few surprises, maybe a tear or two. Overall, I felt the finale to be satisfying but unspectacular, the only twist being that there really wasn’t a major twist. Here are my big takeaways from the episode: The Mother Is Dead. Yep. They called you insane […]

6 big questions for the How I Met Your Mother finale

After nine seasons, we’ll finally learn how (or if) Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) found marital bliss with “The Mother” (Cristin Milioti) in the two-part How I Met Your Mother finale, “Last Forever,” airing Monday, March 31, at 8pm ET/PT. We’ll also learn what happened to newlyweds Robin and Barney (Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris) and Italy-bound parents Lily and Marshall (Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel). Theories for how the series will end abound, and Hannigan says all our questions will be answered, even those we didn’t know we had. While we ponder those, here are the six big questions we do […]

TCA: “How I Met Your Mother” reflects on 9-year run

Back in 2005, CBS unveiled a rather unassuming pilot, with a unique concept. How I Met Your Mother was set in the future, with the main character telling his two teenage children the story of their parents’ romance. Nine improbable seasons later, Ted Mosby’s matrimonial odyssey is about to reach its conclusion, and the cast and creators shared some of their fondest memories with reporters Wednesday night. Sitting at the studio they’ve called home for nine years, actors Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders — all of whom have seen their stars rise during […]

How I Met Your Mother recap: “Something New”

For an episode called “Something New,” How I Met Your Mother resorted to pretty much all its old tricks in its eighth season finale. Except, oh OK, we did get to see the mother, even if Ted hasn’t quite gotten to meet her. It starts a week before Barney and Robin’s wedding as the two of them try to have a nice dinner but instead encounter an obnoxious couple played by Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) and Keegan Michael Key (Key & Peele), who are actually billed as “Obnoxious Woman” and “Obnoxious Man.” They do obnoxious things like demand Barney and […]

Will “How I Met Your Mother” avoid the Season 9 curse?

Kids, it looks like we’re finally going to get to meet Ted’s wife on How I Met Your Mother, as the CBS sitcom that has mastered the art of the delayed payoff will end its run with Season 9. Wait, hold up. Season 9? That could be trouble. You see, it turns out that there have been several stalwart series that have lost their way by the ninth go-round. Whether it’s a case of the cast getting ridiculously blonder and slimmer — which is totally what happens to people in real life, right? — or whether an idea has just […]

“How I Met Your Mother” recap: Robin 101

By Mike Frey Synopsis: Since Barney hasn’t exactly been a boyfriend in a while, it’s no surprise that he’s bad at it. He’s unsupportive and he’s so used to not sleeping over that he tries sleepwalking his way down the fire escape to get away from Robin. Luckily, Ted knows everything there is to know about Robin — or at least he thinks he does — and he needs to practice his teaching. So Barney enrolls in Robin 101: How to Date Robin Scherbatsky, taught by none other than Professor Mosby. Unfortunately for Barney, the study sessions are about as […]

“How I Met Your Mother” Recap: Double Date

By Mike Frey Synopsis: This episode tells the story of two blind dates taken by Ted seven years apart. Although it might as well have been one, since the dates were the same in every way: same restaurant, same conversation, same girl. Despite the familiarity, neither Ted nor his date Jen (played by guest star Lindsay Sloane, who we love) realize what’s going on until halfway through the evening. Once they realize that they’ve lapped the whole dating field, they decided to give each other insight that might help them avoid the dating mistakes that have kept them single since […]

“How I Met Your Mother” Recap: Definitions

By Mike Frey Synopsis: Two big events are taking place as we catch up with the HIMYM gang: Ted’s first day of school and “the talk.” Well, the first one’s happening. After dating all summer, Barney and Robin tried to have the talk but the talk sucks. While they’re fine with putting it off, Lily isn’t. She tries everything she can to force them into defining their relationship. When even a date between Robin and Brad — and a Kiss Cam punch by a jealous and very overmatched Barney — fails to do the trick, she locks them in a […]

“How I Met Your Mother” Recap: The Leap

By Mike Frey Synopsis: Remember the episode from last season titled “The Goat”? Well, this week’s season finale tells the story of Ted’s 31st birthday party — the one he kept confusing with his previous birthday party in that episode. It would be easy to mix them up, since Marshall decided to throw him two consecutive surprise parties. At this one, the biggest surprise is that Barney loves Robin. OK, so nobody is actually surprised to hear that, except Robin who overhears Barney describing her to Ted as a Canadian suit in a deliberately delivered metaphor.
