LeBron James’ “The Decision” to air on ESPN

By Ryan Berenz

espn_special_lebronI feel kind of dirty posting this, considering the absurdity of it all, but I’m sure this program will get a ton of viewers. Reports are that LeBron is favoring joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, so maybe someone from a competing network will confirm it and report it before ESPN does and we can all skip this circus. (Yeah, I know about the proceeds going to charity thing. Doesn’t make it any less silly.) Here is the release from ESPN:

“The Decision” to be Presented Live on ESPN Thursday at 9 p.m. ET

LeBron James to Make Formal Announcement as to Where He’ll Play Next

One of the most anticipated decisions in the sports world – where NBA superstar free agent LeBron James will play next season and beyond – will be officially revealed on “The Decision,” to be presented live on ESPN and ESPN Radio Thursday, July 8, at 9 p.m. ET.

Proceeds from “The Decision” will be donated to Boys & Girls Club of America in support of James’ vision to construct basketball courts for youth across the country. The program will be co-presented by University of Phoenix and Bing. vitaminwater® and McDonald’s will also sponsor the program. In addition, Nike and Sprite are making contributions in support of this charitable initiative. LeBron James and his marketing company, LRMR Marketing, were responsible for securing the sponsors for this unique event.

NCAA agrees to new 14-year deal with CBS and Turner Sports

By Ryan

The NCAA announced a new 14-year deal with CBS Sports and Turner Sports for TV, Internet and wireless broadcast rights for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship beginning in 2011 and running through 2024 for more than $10.8 billion. Here are some details on the agreement:

  • Beginning in 2011, all opening-round, first-round and second-round games will be shown live on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. CBS and Turner will split coverage of the regional semifinal games.
  • CBS will air the regional finals and the Final Four through 2015. Beginning in 2016, coverage of the regional finals will be split by CBS and Turner with the Final Four and the National Championship game alternating every year between CBS and TBS.
  • NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee unanimously passed a recommendation to the Division I Board of Directors to increase tournament field size to 68 teams beginning with the 2011 Championship. The recommendation will be reviewed by the Division I Board of Directors at its April 29 meeting.

So it seems we’ve been spared the monster 96-team tournament that had been discussed, at least for now. And we’ll get coverage of every game live, thanks to Turner’s three networks. (Though I admit it will be strange to see college hoops on truTV, which was Court TV not too long ago.) CBS will keep the later rounds, the Final Four and the championship through 2015, then it will alternate with TBS every other year beginning in 2016. This is a little like MLB’s deal with TBS and FOX for the League Championship Series, but even in that deal FOX carries the entire World Series. The Final Four and championship will be exclusively on TBS every other year, which might not sit well with people who are without a pay TV service. And it’s yet another example of major sports championships migrating away from free broadcast TV. How long before the NBA, MLB and NFL take their championships exclusively to cable?

Where to watch the 2010 NCAA Tournament Final Four

By Ryan

ncaa-final-four-2010-logoWell, we’re down to the NCAA Tournament semifinals, the Final Four. Some are calling this an underwhelming Final Four. I heard it described yesterday as “the Great Alaska Shootout.” Which, yeah, I could see that. I’m figuring that Michigan State beats Butler, since MSU has pretty much coasted through the tournament facing weak opposition. Then the Spartans just get pounded in the finals (again) by Duke. CBS has announced the airtimes for the games on Saturday, as well as a feature with President Barack Obama playing CBS analyst Clark Kellogg in a one-on-one game. From CBS:

CBS Sports has announced tip times for the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Final Four games on Saturday, April 3 (6:00-11:00 PM, ET). Butler takes on Michigan State to tip-off the day (6:07 PM, ET), followed by Duke against West Virginia 40 minutes after conclusion of the first game (approximately 8:47 PM, ET).

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA GOES ONE-ON-ONE WITH CLARK KELLOGG DURING CBS SPORTS’ NCAA FINAL FOUR COVERAGE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 3

CBS Sports’ lead college basketball analyst Clark Kellogg goes one-one-one with President Barack Obama in an interview and game of basketball during CBS Sports’ exclusive coverage of the NCAA Final Four® on Saturday, April 3 (4:00-11:00 PM, ET). Kellogg and CBS News’ EARLY SHOW co-anchor Harry Smith challenge the President to a game on the White House basketball court.
