Where To Watch The NBA Draft (Now With 100 Percent Less Stephen A. Smith)

By Ryan

I’ll readily admit that the NBA Draft is not something I typically take a great deal of interest in. This year, I am exceptionally disinterested because 1) This draft class is horrible, and 2) There will be no Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s draft coverage. Over the past few drafts, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Stephen A. Smith Heckling Society of Gentlemen and the work they’ve done at the NBA Draft. The SASHSG will be back this year, but it appears as though it will be their final appearance:

Details of ESPN’s NBA Draft coverage (and last year’s awesome tribute to Cheez Doodles) after the jump:

Where To Watch The NBA Finals

By Ryan

lakers_bryant_0207webThe NBA Finals tip off Thursday, June 4 at 9pm ET on ABC, with Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic taking on Kobe Bryant and the L.A. Lakers. It’s not the Kobe vs. LeBron series we were all expecting, and it’s likely a lot of viewers will dismiss it. Nobody even seems to care about this matchup — they’re all still fixating on LeBron’s media and handshake snub. Obviously, the “Can Kobe win one without Shaq?” storyline will dominate. There’s also debate about ESPN/ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy being on the broadcasts with his brother Stan being the Magic’s head coach. But if those are the only things that can generate any interest, then … yawn.

But really, the matchup is intriguing, even if the storylines really aren’t. The Magic dispatched both the Celtics and the Cavs to get here, and they’re not to be underestimated. That said, I’m taking the Lakers in seven games.

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 Schedule

By Ryan

So as we enter the Sweet 16, you probably fall into one of three camps: 1) You are so stoked to see the best teams from the power conferences in epic battles of basketball Armageddon 2) You have no rooting interest in any of this anymore except that you’re bracket is still holding up 3) Your bracket is busted (thank you, Wake Forest) and you just want to get this over with. I’m sitting comfortably in camp 3. Without a Cinderella entry into the Sweet 16, there’s a lot of drama missing, even though you’ve essentially got the creme de la creme of college basketball powerhouses. I’ll probably latch onto Arizona, the No. 12 seed that a lot of people were saying didn’t even belong in the tournament — but considering the history of that program, it’s not like we’re dealing with George Mason here.

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second Round Schedule

By Ryan

While there’s a lot of basketball still to be played in the first round as of Friday afternoon, it’s not too early to look ahead to the second-round action this weekend on CBS.

Thursdays games offered few close contests and not many surprises. CS-Northridge gave Memphis a tougher game than the Tigers expected, and I was sweating out Michigan vs. Clemson. UCLA holding on for a 65-64 win over No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth turned out to be the most exciting game of the day.

Some second-round games I’ll be watching closely: Gonzaga vs. Western Kentucky — everyone’s favorite past Cinderella vs. everyone’s favorite present Cinderella. I’ve got a lot riding on Villanova beating UCLA, and I took Texas to knock Duke out of the Dance.

Full Saturday and Sunday tournament schedules after the jump.

President Obama’s Bracket Has … North Carolina!

By Ryan

In an exclusive interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz, President Barack Obama filled out his NCAA Tournament bracket and has North Carolina defeating Louisville in the finals. “Now, for the Tar Heels that are watching, I picked you all last year — you let me down,” Obama says. “This year, don’t embarrass me in front of the nation, all right? I’m counting on you. I still got those sneakers you guys gave me.” The interview will re-air Wednesday, March 18, during the 6pm and 11pm ET editions of SportsCenter. You can view the president’s entire bracket at ESPN’s Tournament Challenge.

Said Katz following the interview, “President Obama made his picks as a sports fan, not as a politician. He was knowledgeable about the teams, and was even up to date on the latest injuries involving the contenders. He was confident with his picks and delivered an on-camera pep talk for the team he picked to win it all. It was clear that he enjoyed filling out his bracket like the rest of America.”
