Where to watch the 2010 US Open tennis tournament

By Ryan Berenz

The final Grand Slam event for 2010, the US Open, returns to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro shocked five-time defending US Open champ Roger Federer at last year’s tournament. The 20-year-old Del Potro, playing in his first Grand Slam final, ended Federer’s 40-match winning streak in New York. Top contenders this year include Federer, Wimbledon champ Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic. Del Potro won’t be defending his title this year due to injury. On the women’s side, Kim Clijsters became the first unseeded woman to win the US Open by beating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Clijsters capped off an amazing comeback, having spent two years away from tennis to raise her daughter, Jada. Clijsters, Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic, Samantha Stosur and Elena Dementieva are among the top contenders this year. Noticeably absent is Serena Williams, who had to withdraw due to an unfortunate cut on her foot. ESPN2, Tennis Channel and CBS share coverage of the tournament Aug. 30-Sept. 2.

CBS to air preview of new fall lineup

Belushi and O'Connell in "The Defenders"

Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell, stars of CBS’ new drama The Defenders, will be hosting CBS Fall Preview, a special airing Sept. 6 at 8:30pm ET/PT on, naturally, CBS. The program will also be available On Demand to customers of AT&T U-Verse, Bright House, Comcast, Frontier Communications, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS TV.

The program includes sneak peeks of five new additions to the CBS primetime schedule — Hawaii Five-0 (premieres Sept. 20); The Defenders (Sept. 23); Blue Bloods (Sept. 24); $#*! My Dad Says (Sept. 23); and Mike & Molly (Sept. 20).

And you can rest assured that, according to CBS, Belushi and O’Connell will introduce the video previews with a “fun mix of banter during what appears to be a wardrobe fitting for their Vegas lawyer characters, surrounded by bold suits and pinky rings galore.” Just as long as there’s no wardrobe malfunction.

Spike goes Hawaiian with a week of “Hawaii Five-O”

by Karl J. Paloucek

He was the top cop on the Islands. Jack Lord’s Steve McGarrett was a virtual one-man force, taking on international espionage, drug kingpins, organized crime, counterfeiting … and murder — especially murder. With his signature “Book ‘em, Danno — murder one!” he closed dozens of gripping cases and helped the series become respected as one of the templates for the modern police drama.

As CBS returns to the scene of the Hawaiian crime series with its 21st-century update, “Hawaii Five-0,” Spike honors the original with a weeklong presentation of the entire 1968 first season of the Emmy-winning series. Starting Monday, Aug. 30, the network will broadcast McGarrett and Danno’s exploits from 9am-6pm ET/PT, until the Season 1 finale Friday, Sept. 3.

And in the unlikely case you’ve forgotten one of the coolest themesongs in television history …

Where to watch the 2010 PGA Championship

By Ryan Berenz

The year’s final major takes place along the shore of Lake Michigan at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis., site of the PGA Championship in 2004. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els and golf’s best will try to win the Wanamaker trophy and end the season on a high note. Last year’s PGA Championship was a stunner, with unheralded Y.E. Yang of Korea outplaying runner-up Tiger Woods in the final round for a three-stroke victory. It was a rare loss for Woods — he lost for the first time in 15 major championships when he had the lead or share of the lead after 54 holes. It was also the first time since 2004 that Woods went winless in the four majors. With Woods coming off the worst performance of his pro career, it’s likely that he’ll go winless in the majors for another year. TNT and CBS share coverage of this year’s PGA Championship Aug. 12-15. Full coverage details and releases from CBS, TNT and GOLF CHANNEL after the jump. Here’s the live tournament schedule on TNT and CBS:

David Hasselhoff returns to “The Young and the Restless”

The Hoff is feeling a little “Restless” again, as he returns to the series that first gave him fame. David Hasselhoff played Dr. William “Snapper” Foster Jr. from 1975-82 on the long-running CBS daytime drama The Young and the Restless, and he will be briefly reprising that role on the series this month. Hasselhoff appears on the episodes airing June 15-18, and June 21.

The character of Snapper has been working in London, but returns home to visit his sister, Jill (Jess Walton), and finds himself unexpectedly caught up in a family drama.

“I was so honored to be asked back by the Bell family for a short visit to Genoa City,” says Hasselhoff, “this time with my daughter, Taylor Ann.” (Taylor Ann will be making her daytime debut on June 16, playing a nurse in scenes with her father). “It was surreal and felt like I never left.”

In other Y&R casting, James Clement, who was a contestant on the recent Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, will make his daytime debut on the show June 4, playing a police officer in scenes with Greg Rikaart, Peter Bergman, Eric Braeden and Joshua Morrow.

Which kids’ shows really DESERVE an Emmy?

fairly-oddparents_0510

Yep — it's Daytime Emmy time!

by Karl J. Paloucek

This past Wednesday, the nominations went out for the 37th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards, which is where a lot of the kids’ shows get recognized. The big event is set for June 25 in Los Angeles, and will be taped for broadcast on CBS June 27. Who comes out on top when it comes to kids’ programming? PBS handily takes a lead with 36 children’s programming-related nominations, followed by Nickelodeon with 25. Disney Channel narrowly edges out Cartoon Network‘s four nominations with five.

Not the strongest showing for the mighty Mouse, but with shows like The Suite Life and Wizards of Waverly Place among their more typical offerings, they’re arguably a little less focused on child development, which could be what gives PBS and Nickelodeon the edge. Looking at the [Read more →]

NCAA agrees to new 14-year deal with CBS and Turner Sports

By Ryan

The NCAA announced a new 14-year deal with CBS Sports and Turner Sports for TV, Internet and wireless broadcast rights for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship beginning in 2011 and running through 2024 for more than $10.8 billion. Here are some details on the agreement:

  • Beginning in 2011, all opening-round, first-round and second-round games will be shown live on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. CBS and Turner will split coverage of the regional semifinal games.
  • CBS will air the regional finals and the Final Four through 2015. Beginning in 2016, coverage of the regional finals will be split by CBS and Turner with the Final Four and the National Championship game alternating every year between CBS and TBS.
  • NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee unanimously passed a recommendation to the Division I Board of Directors to increase tournament field size to 68 teams beginning with the 2011 Championship. The recommendation will be reviewed by the Division I Board of Directors at its April 29 meeting.

So it seems we’ve been spared the monster 96-team tournament that had been discussed, at least for now. And we’ll get coverage of every game live, thanks to Turner’s three networks. (Though I admit it will be strange to see college hoops on truTV, which was Court TV not too long ago.) CBS will keep the later rounds, the Final Four and the championship through 2015, then it will alternate with TBS every other year beginning in 2016. This is a little like MLB’s deal with TBS and FOX for the League Championship Series, but even in that deal FOX carries the entire World Series. The Final Four and championship will be exclusively on TBS every other year, which might not sit well with people who are without a pay TV service. And it’s yet another example of major sports championships migrating away from free broadcast TV. How long before the NBA, MLB and NFL take their championships exclusively to cable?
