Getting “Lost”: The Variable Review

By Mike Frey and johnnysweeptheleg

Think you have issues with your parents? Try being Daniel Faraday. Not only does his mother force him to quit playing piano in order to focus on physics, but she and his father — who just might be the most evil dude in the Lost universe — conspire to send him to an island where he will be killed … by her. Most moms just make their kids eat broccoli and stop slouching. Then again, very few of the parents on Lost will be contending for a Mother or Father of the Year award any time soon …

johnnysweeptheleg’s “Lost” in a Moment:

Welcome back, Twitchy! Which is more surprising — that Faraday is back on the island or that Dharma’s headquarters can be found in Ann Arbor, Michigan, of all places?

It feels like Faraday’s on The Amazing Race. He’s on the run the entire episode. First, spending 17 seconds by Jack, waking him up to notify him that Eloise was wrong about this being their destiny, but not staying long enough to hear Jack explain the wild dream he had last night involving Kate, Juliet and the Smoke Monster’s younger sister, who is, you guessed it, smokin’ hot.

Getting “Lost”: Dead Is Dead Review

By Mike Frey and johnnysweeptheleg

Last night’s episode, “Dead Is Dead,” presented us with the most frightening phenomenon we’ve seen yet on Lost — Ben Linus with emo bangs. A note for the show’s producers: combing Michael Emerson’s hair forward does not make us forget the fact that he is 55 years old. We’ve already seen three actors portray Charles Widmore. What would have been the harm in hiring someone to bridge the gap between frail young Ben and creepy old Ben? There are plenty of twentysomething actors out there.

Anyway, the other big news is that, contrary to what you might have read, johnnysweeptheleg will continue to cowrite these Lost posts, at least through the end of this season. So, without further ado …

johnnysweeptheleg’s Lost in a Moment:

Boy, throw some classy clothes on Locke, and suddenly he thinks he’s running the joint. I’m not sure if Ben’s more surprised to awake to the image of Locke alive or just finally not wearing that damn dirty white t-shirt.

Getting “Lost”: Dead Is Dead Preview

By Mike Frey

Johnnysweeptheleg has left the building. Where is he? Probably the same place Rose and Bernard have gone. Like the island’s favorite married couple, johnny will likely pop up again sometime — probably in the comments section — but, until then, I’ll be doing these Lost posts like Eric Carmen. That’s right … all by myself. So bear with me.

With that said, let’s talk about this week’s episode. Here’s what ABC has to say about “Dead Is Dead”: To atone for sins of the past, Ben must attempt to summon the smoke monster in order to be judged. Guest stars include Nestor Carbonell as Richard Alpert, Tania Raymonde as Alex, Sonya Walger as Penelope “Penny” Widmore, Alan Dale as Charles Widmore, Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, Sterling Beaumon as young Ben, Zuleikha Robinson as Ilana, Said Taghmaoui as Caesar, Melissa Farman as young Danielle Rousseau, Brad William Henke as Bram and Matt Hoffman as Jed.

Getting “Lost”: The Life And Death Of Jeremy Bentham Review

By Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

We told you this episode would be a good one. (Sure, we could have said that before just about any episode so far this season, and we would have been right — but let us have our moment.) After waiting all last season to find out who was in the coffin, we find out seven episodes into this one exactly how he got there. We also see the return of Matthew Abaddon — only to see him gunned down RoboCop style while loading John Locke’s wheelchair into the trunk. Most importantly, we’re also reminded that we should never trust Benjamin Linus, no matter how warm and fuzzy he might appear.

johnnysweeptheleg’s Lost in a Moment:

Too bad Lepidus wasn’t flying Oceanic 815, after all. Maybe it wouldn’t have split in half and caused so many to become polar bear food. Lepidus has landed Ajira Flight 316 on the neighboring Hydra island, with minor consequence. In fact, it was such a soft landing, that rather than killing anyone, it actually brought one back to life! [Read more →]

Getting “Lost”: The Life And Death Of Jeremy Bentham Preview

By Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

We haven’t done a Lost preview post in a while, but if ever an episode deserved one, it’s “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham.” When we spoke to head writer Damon Lindelof, he named it as a possible highlight of the season, calling it “an episode where a lot of things come together.” Considering what we’ve already been given so far during what is shaping up to be an incredible season, that would seem to indicate that we should prepare to have our minds blown. If that’s not enough of an endorsement, consider the fact that the preview videos contain scenes that feature Charles Widmore and Matthew Abaddon. We hate to go all Bizarro Comic Book Guy on you, but this is going to be the … Best. Episode. Ever.

Getting Lost: “Jughead” Review

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

We guessed from the episode title that the character of Jones would be significant. We were right — even if it was for all the wrong reasons. We were hoping his full name would be Forsythe P. Jones. Instead “Jughead” referred to a hydrogen bomb, while Jones turned out to be something far more sinister: Charles Widmore. Looking back, we probably should have seen it coming as soon as Miles sensed the fresh grave. Aside from being a typically creepy Lost moment, it was a signal that the name Jones belonged to a buried soldier and that there was a reason that this particular character’s identity had been disguised. But, as usual, we’re much better at figuring things out several hours after we’ve watched the show rather than before or during an episode. What can we say? We’re slow.

johnnysweeptheleg’s Lost in a Moment:

What I love about Lost is that it makes you want to go back and watch old episodes over and over again, after each new secret is revealed. For instance, I need to re-watch the third season’s “Through the Looking Glass.” I thought Charlie wrote “Not Penny’s Boat” on his hand. But now I may be mistaken. “Not Into Birth Control” seems more appropriate.

Getting Lost: “Because You Left”/”The Lie” Review

Posted by Mike and johnnysweeptheleg

It’s hard to determine what we liked best about the return of Lost last night. Was it the return, albeit a brief one, of Neil “Frogurt”? Hurley buying an I Heart My Shih Tzu shirt off the rack at a gas station? Having to scramble though our brains to remember what we know about Ms. Hawking from her previous interactions with Desmond? Those were all great, but mostly we were just excited to have our weekly ritual back where we anticipate, watch and analyze a new episode, then repeat. The one thing we didn’t like was DirecTV causing us to miss the first seven minutes of the episode because of technical difficulties. Difficulties that only affected the ABC feed. Seriously, of all the channels at all the times on all the nights, it had to be ABC on during the Lost season premiere?!. But we digress …

johnnysweeptheleg’s “Lost” In A Moment:

Charlotte wasn’t the only one who started getting a headache from all of the time travel on Lost last night. I’m surprised my nose didn’t begin bleeding before it was over.

Team Sawyer and the rest of the Islanders (not to be confused with the WWF duo from the ’80s, Haku and Tama), spent the season premiere doing the time warp over and over, again. You see, the area under the Orchid is home to an energy that allows you to harness and manipulate time. This is how Ben moved the island. However, there are rules, as we later learn from Faraday. You may move forward or backward in time. But you can’t change anything. You can’t pass Go. And you cannot collect $200. Oh, and if you attempt to change anything, you will fail.
