“Banshee” on Cinemax: Drama! Romance! Suspense! Sex! Action! … Amish?

“Banshee” on Cinemax is a new action drama series following the world of crime and corruption stewing under the seemingly idyllic surface of rural Pennsylvania Amish town Banshee. “I spent 15 years picturing this day, and I got to tell you, this is not how I saw it playing out,” Lucas Hood (Antony Starr) tells his ex-lover — understating things just a little bit — in the new Cinemax action drama Banshee, premiering Friday, Jan. 11, at 10pm ET/PT. Immediately upon his release from state prison, Lucas has a busy day that would tucker out any ex-con. He hits a [...]

With “Hunted,” Cinemax moves into more mature original programming

When Strike Back and Femme Fatales premiered, ushering in Cinemax‘s foray into original programming, they seemed like exactly the kinds of shows Cinemax would come up with. The production values, acting and story lines were improved, but they fit right into the lineup of a network derisively (or affectionately) known as Skinemax. They took the formula of shameless titillation and added slam-bang action, with stellar results. But with Hunted, which premieres tonight at 10pm, Cinemax seems to have grown up a bit. Yes, you’ll still get some side boob (and more) here and there, but this atmospheric spy thriller is [...]

7 Questions With … Betsy Rue of Cinemax’s “Femme Fatales”

7 Questions With … Betsy Rue of Cinemax’s “Femme Fatales”

Betsy Rue gets to keep her clothes on (mostly) for her stint on Femme Fatales. Best known to audiences for her audacious nude scene in the 2009 slasher flick My Bloody Valentine, Rue has also turned up in roles on TV hits like True Blood, NCIS, The Mentalist and (believe it or not) iCarly, where she played a talent-challenged pop star. She’ll play the title character in “Libra,” the Season 2 capper for the Cinemax anthology series — airing Friday at 11pm — starring as a costumed vigilante out to exact high-heeled justice upon the bad guys of Cuesta Verde. [...]

Cinemax explodes into original programming with “Strike Back”

Cinemax explodes into original programming with “Strike Back”

By Stacey Harrison Follow @ChannelGuideSRH Along with the announcement that Cinemax would be venturing into original programming came the snickers and speculation that the resulting shows would be in the vein of the network’s reputation for late-night adult fare. In other words, Skinemax with explosions. As the first show out of the gate, Strike Back, which premieres Friday night, doesn’t do much to counter that assumption, although the acting and production values are admittedly a lot better than your average Deviant Desires or Sinful Temptations. But the “high octane entertainment” banner the network is going for — with this and [...]

“Transporter” film franchise to become Cinemax series

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Cinemax announced today that filming has begun in Toronto on a new action series for the network called Transporter, based on the hit film franchise of the same name. Chris Vance (Burn Notice, Prison Break) will be starring in the title role of professional transporter Frank Martin, who operates in a seedy underworld of criminals and desperate players. Andrea Osvart (Duplicity) costars as Martin’s trusted handler Carla, and Francois BerlĂ©and reprises his role of Inspector Tarconi from the films. Rounding out the cast are Delphine ChanĂ©ac in a recurring role as Juliette, a reporter who [...]

Five Fabulous Flicks (Plus Two)

by Karl J. Paloucek Start the weekend — and next week — right with these films airing June 12-18. All times ET. June 12 Tropic Thunder (2008) This one’s up in the air — depending on your sense of humor, it’s either the funniest movie of 2008 or it’s an OK comedy with Ben Stiller and Jack Black. Regardless, it still yields an Academy Award-nominated performance from Robert Downey Jr. in his controversial role as African-American action-film star Kirk Lazarus, and enough audacity to make it a pop-culture staple. Cinemax (HD), 8pm ET June 13 The Dark Knight (2008) Why [...]

Five Fabulous Flicks

There’s a worthy film for every night of your week. Here are our picks for April 26-30. Remember, all airtimes are ET. April 26 The Night of the Hunter (1955) “Leeeaning … leeeaning …” Never has a Protestant hymn been so creepy. Robert Mitchum stars as the preacher with LOVE and HATE tattooed on his fists and an agenda from a place a little south of heaven. TCM, 6pm ET April 27 Sabrina (1995) Nothing will replace Holden, Bogey and Hepburn in the original, but this Sydney Pollack-directed remake appropriately casts Harrison Ford as the uptight stuffed shirt who gets [...]

by Karl J. Paloucek There’s a worthy film for every night of your week. Here are our picks for April 19-25. Remember, all airtimes are ET. April 19 The Pianist (2002) Director Roman Polanski revisits the Warsaw of his childhood in this compelling story of pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody) and his struggle to survive the destruction all around him. The film earned three Academy Awards, including Best Actor and Best Director. Harrowing and brilliant. IFC, 10pm ET April 20 The Conversation (1974) In between directing his epics The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II, Francis Ford Coppola

"Juno" airs April 14 on Cinemax

by Karl J. Paloucek There’s a worthy film for every night of your week. Here are our picks for April 12-18. Remember, all airtimes are ET. April 12 The Departed (2006) He’s done better films by far, so it’s a little disappointing that this effort — a remake of a 2002 Hong Kong thriller — was the one to bring Martin Scorsese Academy gold, but it definitely has his fingerprints all over it. Solid performances from Martin Sheen, Matt Damon and even Leonardo DiCaprio make this a knuckle-biter you’ll want to see again … if you can stand the tension. [...]
