Logan Marshall-Green and Cinemax’s Quarry Are Fall TV Standouts

Logan Marshall-Green has found his defining career moment in Cinemax’s agonizingly gripping new drama Quarry, premiering Friday, Sept. 9 at 10pmET. While you may know him from TNT’s short-lived Dark Blue or 2012’s Prometheus (he played Charlie Halloway), he’s almost unrecognizable in his shaggy ’stache and ’70s backdrop as Mac Conway, a scandalized Vietnam vet who returns to his unwelcoming Memphis hometown with few opportunities. Named one of Channel Guide Magazine’s Top 9 new series this fall, Quarry is a thought-provoking gut punch that just doesn’t stop. The 8-episode season is based on Max Allan Collins’ Quarry novels that follow […]

The Knick Season 2 — Steven Soderbergh’s medical marvel returns to Cinemax

If you’re a fan of director Steven Soderbergh’s beautifully rendered, Emmy-nominated period drama The Knick (and if you’re not, trust me, you should be), you know that no one was faring well when we left them at the end of Season 1. • RELATED: The Knick: Cinemax presents a lively look at race, sex and medicine in 1900s New York A cocaine-addled and guilt-ridden Dr. John Thackery (Golden Globe nominee Clive Owen) checked himself into a sort of turn-of-the-century rehab where the treatment du jour is the Bayer Company’s newest wonder drug — heroin. Embittered by his daughter’s death, the mortifying […]

Cinemax picks up new Robert Kirkman drama series “Outcast”

Will Cinemax have the next Walking Dead on its hands? I’m sure it hopes so, following today’s announcement that the network has picked up the 10-episode drama series Outcast, created and executive produced by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and based on the comic by Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta. From Cinemax: “Outcast follows Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson, a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle […]

Strike Back Season 4 resumes production; Michelle Yeoh among new cast members

The Cinemax action-drama series Strike Back recently resumed production on Season 4 (its final season) in Europe, the network said today. The show’s production had been on hiatus to allow star Sullivan Stapleton the chance to recuperate from a non-set-related injury sustained earlier this year. Production on Strike Back Season 4 will continue through the fall, with additional production in Thailand, according to Cinemax. In the release about the restarting of production, Cinemax also mentioned that several new cast members are now on board, including Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II), Dustin Clare (the Spartacus series), Will Yun Lee […]

Andre Holland on The Knick: “I feel a really deep and personal connection with Algernon”

Andre Holland knew he was meant to play Dr. Algernon Edwards in the absorbing Cinemax drama The Knick from the moment the script landed in his hands. The problem? Holland was vacationing in Italy and had minutes to submit an audition tape if he wanted the part. So, much like his put-upon, resourceful character, Holland made magic with what he had. “My agents were like, ‘The producers are moving very fast with this and we need you to get something on tape right away!’”Holland laughs. “So I found a British couple who were also vacationing at the time and talked […]

Clive Owen on The Knick: “I knew it was something I had to do”

Steven Soderbergh’s latest foray into television, The Knick, is now airing Friday nights at 10/9CT on Cinemax. Essentially a 10-episode feature film — gloriously acted, beautifully shot and chock-full of fascinating characters crafted by the veteran writing team of Jack Amiel and Michael Begler — The Knick is the sort of series that begs for binge-watching. And it doesn’t take more than a few episodes to understand why the series has already been renewed for a second season. Clive Owen stars as Dr. John Thackery, chief surgeon of New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital — and yes, there really was one, though […]

The Knick: Cinemax presents a lively look at race, sex and medicine in 1900s New York

At the turn of the 20th century, New York City’s Knickerbocker Hospital was deeply in flux. As the wealthy patrons who once filled its beds — and its bank account — fled its urban locale for loftier boroughs, replaced by a teeming brew of racial and cultural disparities, the doctors and nurses at the “The Knick” struggled to stay atop the city’s burgeoning medical community. This is the world from which director Steven Soderbergh’s engrossing new fact-meets-fiction Cinemax series The Knick, which premieres Friday, emerges. Created by the veteran writing team of Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, the 10-episode drama sprung […]
