“Sex and the City” fandom not required to enjoy “The Carrie Diaries”

“Sex and the City” fandom not required to enjoy “The Carrie Diaries”

As a straight man, I wasn’t necessarily in the primary demo that seemed to be most drawn to HBO’s famed 1998-2004 series Sex and the City, which was inspired by the writings of Candace Bushnell and followed the romantic adventures of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her gal pals in the Big Apple. I tuned in enough to be able to appreciate the writing and acting, but I didn’t fully connect with or relate to, I suppose, the women, or their glamorous Manhattan backdrop. So when I first heard that The CW was creating a series out of The Carrie Diaries – based on [...]

Documentary special looks at the history and evolution of the Batmobile

The CW will be airing the broadcast network premiere of a new half-hour special about the history and evolution of Batman’s iconic ride — the Batmobile — on July 16 (the special makes its world premiere July 12 at Comic-Con in San Diego, where all six of the Batmobiles from film and TV will also appear for the first time together). The special is simply, and appropriately, called The Batmobile, and uses archival footage, images and illustrations of the Batmobile to document its birth and evolution to the present day. Interviews with filmmakers, key designers, builders, stunt drivers, actors and [...]

McBride, Bieber, Gaga, Poinsettia Bowl and “The X-Factor” highlight great night of entertainment

It might seem a little sacrilegious during the holidays to refer to a piece of technology as a savior, but the DVR can certainly be your best friend with so many great specials, movies and sporting events airing this time of year. Our favorite dramas and sitcoms take a well-deserved break to make room for more seasonal fare, and tonight is a great example of the entertainment cup running over. So set that DVR to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun this evening.

New fall TV series are likely to be canceled

New fall TV series are likely to be canceled

Remember Crusoe? Miss Guided? How about Journeyman? Neither do we. Pardon our cynicism, but if you’re interested in a new broadcast network series this fall, here’s a little advice: Don’t get too attached. We took a look back at the success rates of debut series for ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX and NBC over the last five television seasons, and the numbers are grim. Statistically, only 1 out of 3 new series will see the light of a second season. Even fewer will last beyond the sophomore slump to season 3. The worst year for debut series came in 2008-2009, [...]

Around here, at least, you can feel it with the days getting darker a tad earlier than they had been, and some slightly cooler temps in the evenings. At this point our staff is pretty well-versed in what is coming up, but you may not be. To help you out, some networks are presenting preview specials highlighting new [...]

TCA Summer Press Tour: Torture, Witches, H8Rs, Love Labs and more

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Thursday was my first full day at the TCA press tour,  and the sessions ran the gamut with mostly interesting, and sometimes odd, panels of Showtime and CW programs. Things kicked off with Damian Lewis talking about getting peed on a few days ago, and finished up with talk of Dr. Drew’s Love Lab, if that gives you any indication of the day. “Homeland” Security The first panel was for Showtime’s new drama series Homeland, which looks really good. Stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Morena Baccarin were here to discuss it, along with executive [...]

TCA Summer Press Tour: CBS/Showtime/CW party is a moment of Zen

TCA Summer Press Tour: CBS/Showtime/CW party is a moment of Zen

By Jeff Pfeiffer Follow @ChannelGuideJP Yesterday I made my way out to Beverly Hills to round out the relay team of Channel Guide TCA Press Tour coverage (see earlier posts from Barb Oates and Ryan Berenz for more TCA adventures and info). I’ve been doing this tour for over a decade now, and I always feel somewhat out of sorts on the first day I get here. Obviously, jet lag and a long travel day factor into this, but there is something more, I think. Something like the culture shock one may get when traveling to a foreign country, and [...]
